LONDON - Of all the sports at the Tokyo Olympics later this year none inhabit the frontline of climate change quite like surfing.
Which is why when the wave sport makes its debut on Chibas Tsurigasaki Beach, there will be more than gold medals at stake.
As well as showcasing the worlds elite surfers to a brand new audience, International Surfing Association (ISA) president Fernando Aguerre says the goal will be to also highlight the growing threat to the planets oceans.
Surfers, he says, are the ambassadors of the oceans and the eyes of the world when it comes to the health of the seas.
We are the guinea pigs of society when it comes to the whats going on in the oceans, Aguerre told Reuters by telephone from his home beach of Mar del Plata in Argentina, where the day before he took part in a huge litter sweep along some of the resorts golden sands.
We surfers, we live on the ocean, we literally submerge ourselves, we have ocean water into our ears, eyes and skin. In reality we are the perfect ambassadors of the ocean.
We see the damage and degradation that is being done.
While sewage and industrial pollution have long been a blight on the habitat of surfers, an existential threat is the predicted sea-level changes brought about by global warming.

More nonsense
The Olympics: “Americans” protesting our flag, and “scientists” whose only qualification is believing fake science. No, thank you. I’ll skip their televised ad for the left again this year.
Surfing now an olympic sport? Can’t wait till high velocity speed knitting is recognized too
[We surfers, we live on the ocean, we literally submerge ourselves, we have ocean water into our ears, eyes and skin. In reality we are the perfect ambassadors of the ocean.] Nope!
[While sewage and industrial pollution have long been a blight on the habitat of surfers, an existential threat is the predicted sea-level changes brought about by global warming.] No!, Nope!, Negatory! Just Damn, NO!
Are you suggesting that surfing isn’t a sport and doesn’t have highly trained athletes who compete against each other?
Meanwhile, in coastal Maine right now it’s seven degrees below zero. I would love some “globull warming” here!
Let’s force these surfers, crazy Greta, the Pope, Al Gore, Leonardo DeCrapio, et al to stand outside here in their undies for 15 minutes.
You’d think surfers who love the ocean would want to see it get bigger.
an existential threat is the predicted sea-level changes brought about by global warming....”
Their claim of authority in the matter of fighting climate change is based upon a special and hightened sense of respect for nature...Okiedoke. ...Morons
They’ve got nothing to worry about. The coronavirus will have wiped out Asia by then.
My nephew, who works in Prudoe Bay,. says it has been 40 below since he has been up there this trip.
...and if not, the scare will insure a delay of the Tokyo Olympics.
Then you’ll be loving the Surf Biathlon where surfers
have to shoot targets on the beach and in the water.
Boring to watch and not worthy of a bonafide olympic sport. Give me a venue where waves are a minimum of 50 ft. and I might reconsider.......
With that being said, I would much rather watch women's softball or racquetball but both sports were exhibition only and discontinued.......But to each their own.
You do know what the IOC criteria is for accepting a sport into the olympics is don't you? Surfing does not match that criteria and that is why it will not last as a recognized sport............
OK with me..
Surfing is more popular and more followed than two thirds of Olympic sports.
In how many global countries? That's the key bro and that's why racquetball and women's sofball were exhibition only and discontinued.........
Surfing will end up the same way.......
Your ignorance of the popularity of surfing world wide is beyond comprehension.
Just stop, you're making a fool of yourself.
