Hong Kong (CNN)The Chinese province at the center of the novel coronavirus outbreak reported a record spike in deaths Thursday, bringing the total number to more than 1,300 people globally, as experts warned the epidemic could "create havoc" in less prepared countries.
Health authorities in Hubei announced an additional 242 deaths and 14,840 cases of the virus, known officially as Covid-19, as of Thursday morning, the largest single-day rise since the epidemic began and almost 10 times the number of cases confirmed the previous day.

The epidemiology of Wuhan city and its hinterlands (Hubei province) is not being reproduced anywhere else in China or in the overseas imports.
Yes, it’s only 3 weeks since Wuhan was closed off, and yes, this may look very different in a couple of weeks. Our epidemiology people are certainly more pessimistic than I have ever seen.
That having been said, if things stay as they are - sporadic cases (hundreds-low thousands) in the other provinces of China, and transmission chains overseas that burn out quickly - the question will have to be raised - why is Wuhan different? And specifically, was there an unnatural mass exposure event there in early December?
The Chinese saw the numbers jump on that cruise ship and knew they couldn’t make that drop believable

People here want a real conspiracy theory should wonder of China isnt using this as an excuse to off a bunch of extra people they dont “need”.
To keep things in perspective, 18,000 Americans died from the flu last year. Since October, 2400 Americans have died of the flu to date.

I wouldn’t agree with that, not yet. He’s off by at least a factor of 10...but if he continues these jumps for another week or so, he may then catch up.
As it is, the world lost at least 2 months in researching and starting on a vaccine/isolation plan. I have trouble now giving him any credit. He likely caused millions to be infected, and we’re only just starting.
I did see one factory tried to re-open yesterday, guy showed up sick and they had to quarantine 200 people.

Or that people can be treated for the disease and usually live through it (although there are quite a few criticals now outside of China). And I bet that was true in Wuhan too, in October and November...and by December, their system finally broke down, and by January the horror stories started coming out.
As someone else here said, we may have now moved to the second inning, but we’re still very, very, early.
While being small comfort to the families of those who have died, given the possible origin of this virus in a bioweapons lab it would be only fitting if this bug were to cause the utter downfall of the CCP.
