Chinas health authorities have decided to no longer count as confirmed cases those patients who test positive but dont show symptoms. Skepticism was immediate.
The news was abrupt and, to some, surprising: Overnight, Heilongjiang, a Chinese province near Russia, had cut its count of confirmed coronavirus cases by more than a dozen.
The revision stemmed from what appeared to be a bureaucratic decision, buried in a series of dense documents from the national government. Health officials said that they would reclassify patients who had tested positive for the new coronavirus but did not have symptoms, and take them out of the total count of confirmed cases.
The documents offered little detail or explanation, and skepticism was immediate. A Hong Kong newspaper called the decision a disguise. World Health Organization officials seemed caught off guard when asked about the move at a news conference this week.
The change in counting cases is only one factor that has made it difficult for experts to determine the true scale of the epidemic. The tally so far is that the coronavirus has killed at least 1,100 people and sickened more than 44,000, but experts say definitive numbers are elusive.
In the days since the changes emerged, several virus experts around the world have said that the reclassification was a minor change, even a typical move during new outbreaks. Other experts questioned the revision.
The wary response in some quarters underscores that mistrust of the Chinese government remains pervasive.

Huh. Like the Iowa D3mcrat Party caucus
The tally in China went up 14,840 yesterday (+242 deaths) in Hubei province alone so its getting hard to hide the true numbers.
The world may never know!
There are reports from one crematory claiming to cremate 500 bodies a every day for the last 6 weeks, 21,000 DEAD BODIES. The official death reports from infections is steady at 2.1% of infections. Extrapolate those numbers and you get close to 1,000,000 infections!!
That is Wuhan alone. Even our CDC said today that the numbers coming out of China are a lie and after being in China 1 day The WHO had a cow and said this was basically a disaster in the making..
It will never know the whole truth in China but the world is about to find out how badly it effects non-Chinese...so far not as badly but we have not outrun our healthcare systems yet.
The confirmed cases just jumped from 40,000 to 60,200.
Seriously?

Since people are connected via the Internet, it will be harder to cover for long.
Can they still transmit the virus? -Tom
It’s a good bet North Korea will not be affected.... or will it?
Thank you for the chart but it is two days old.
Humorous comments like yours are the reason I like FR.
Intellectual wit applied to the news is a powerful weapon.
Thank You
Communists lie. It's what they do...Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

It's there. Chinese refugees.
How bad does it have to be that going to North Korea looks like a good idea?
3hrs late on the next day of reporting...
Yes, seriously.
They decided to include those who they are certain have the virus (because of how sick they are) even if they haven’t tested them officially. This is a good indication that the numbers being reported in Hubei province have been limited by the number of test kits available each day. People are getting sick but aren’t being tested and so, until now, they haven’t been counted.
Can they still transmit the virus? -Tom
Yes! They carry the virus and can transmit it to others.
China’s epidemiological practices are a complete joke.
