Only one in a sample of 1,099 patients infected with the new coronavirus was found to have an incubation period of as long as 24 days, a top Chinese scientist has clarified.
The time between initial exposure and development of the first symptoms of the illness is based on the patient's account of the illness.
Dr Zhong Nanshan, a prominent scientist who is leading a government-appointed panel of experts to help control the coronavirus outbreak, said on Tuesday (Feb 11) that caution is needed because there is not enough evidence to regard 24 days as the longest incubation period for the coronavirus, Xinhua reported.

I don't think the 24 days is accurate. It is BS. The 24 days isn't determined scientifically. It is determined based on the "patient's account of the illness".
In any case it only takes one to start a whole lot of problems.

Also, in before Quarantine guy !!!
Measures are being taken to support small and micro sized businesses, including tax cuts, low interest loans, financial assistance and waiving rent on state owned property.
Small businesses account for 80 percent of employment and 60 percent of the Chinese GDP.

I am on the side of those who urge great caution with this disease, and stricter/longer quarantines...but we HAVE to look at facts and avoid running around with our hair on fire. Wild speculation is about as dangerous as total complacency - mainly because such speculation makes people think that you’re over the edge, and they won’t pay attention to you (see “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” for this phenomenon in action).
Level heads, actual facts, calm and cool application of those facts - these things put our species at the top of the food chain. Going nuts over every little thing, or ignoring everything no matter how big, gets people killed - it did so when our ancestor Thag was hunting wild aurochs and looking out for sabre-toothed tigers, and it does so now.
Agreed, if we must err, let's err on the side of caution.Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Do these look like level heads?
This looks like complete chaos descending on China. I wouldn’t trust ANY of the numbers we are being given from them about the number of infected or the dead.
Are level headed, Chinese murdering patients?
No idea if this is legit but ....
a top Chinese scientist has clarified.
Well thats a relief! China still numba one!
There’s a British doctor doing daily updates on YouTube. Yesterday he traced a sick person in Nepal. Then he discussed the distribution of incubation period. He thought it was not unlikely that the person with the 24 day incubation period actually got infected TWICE. He may have been into recovery from the first infection at day 10 - 12, then got re-infected. It was reported as a single infection with a 24 day infectious period.

The men in the pink coats were overheard saying "Sure you are Hillary. Be a nice girl and get into the metal box." and then they drove away.
WE have to maintain level heads.
You want to convince people to take sensible precautions, like washing hands frequently and staying off of planes and cruise ships? I assume that you do...and the best way to do it isn’t to say, “the incubation time is 24 days.” It absolutely is NOT for anyone other than 1 particular patient and, as I mentioned in my earlier post, even that one is questionable because that is based on the patient’s memory, not any kind of scientific test. A scientific test would be to infect 100 people, and see how long it took for them to manifest symptoms. You get one of them to take 24 days, then I will accept that number.
I’m on your side - this thing could, potentially, infect and kill millions over time, and I believe that we as both a society and as individuals need to be aware of what’s going on, and of the precautions to take. But we cannot convince people who are on the fence (i.e. subject to being convinced), let alone skeptics, if we don’t show some logic and some medical reasons to be very wary and take precautions.
WRT the Chinese - yeah, they are panicking and have been since at least 3 weeks ago. That is not a good sign, that is a sign that things are getting out of control. But they are an example of what NOT to do (starting with their societal lack of cleanliness and moving on to the general ignorance of the average person over there about health issues, and culminating in their simple lack of caring about individuals or even large numbers of individuals). Look at China for how NOT to act.
Don’t tell the people on the cruise ships. They will be jumping overboard.
He certainly doesn’t want to start “rumors” by saying anymore. He might be in trouble just for saying this much.
