ATF: Criminals exploiting Alabama gun laws
NBC 15 Mobile, Al ^ | Tuesday, February 11th 2020 | Rachael Wilkerson

Posted on 02/12/2020 7:29:37 AM PST by suthener

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms says Alabama is an easy target for criminals to get a gun.....

The ATF says there is a strong second amendment belief in Alabama as well as other surrounding states, but not a state system of registration or firearm requirements.

"People know that, so this becomes a pipeline almost for firearms leaving legal commerce and then they are sold at flea markets and, etc. Buyers may not ask all the questions they should and someone a little smart and configures state laws and goes from Chicago - a place that has extreme firearms violence but has very strict state laws about purchase," said Marcus Watson.

Marcus Watson runs the AFT field division that oversees Alabama.

He says our state is a source state for guns because "gun laws here are lax compared to other states."

"Someone may purchase 10 firearms legally, go out and shoot them, then they transfer that firearm not from dealer to dealer but individual to individual," said Watson.

Watson says another problem is the lack of gun registration requirements here make it difficult for law enforcement to determine if a gun was stolen or not in certain crimes.

"It is a huge problem," he said.

He says a "gray market" has emerged in Alabama, selling firearms on the street.

"It creates a secondary market where people use guns almost like commerce. On the street a firearm is very valuable. You don't have to break in that house or give up your information. If I can get that gun in a secondary market, nobody knows who I am. I can present myself as anybody and then that gun ends up in some gang banger's hand on the street in Chicago or Michigan, Alabama or wherever," said Watson.

Those of us who remember pre-1968 with no federal gun laws, except the 1934 gun control laws.
Guns were everywhere. Grocery stores, gas stations, clothing stores, cafes, bus stations, hardware stores, sporting good stores, book stores. Everyone had guns for sale, even through the mail.

Cash and carry. No background check, no waiting period, no FBI check. And crime was a lot lower. So what happened?

Hey, BATFuckers, the system that Alabama (and many other states) have WRT to firearms is what is known as “Freedom.” You arseholes might want to do a little reading on the subject, because about 120 million of us have about 500 million guns and plenty of ammo for them. Just sayin’.

“Old joke: When you cross the state line into Alabama, a sheriff’s deputy will stop you and ask if you have a gun.”

When I was early in my HS career, a senior whom I knew fairly well graduated and when on a tour around the country by car with a friend of his. When they crossed the border into Alabama, they of course saw the “Welcome to Alabama!” billboard...but scrawled on it were the following words: “You are now leaving the United States.”

I didn’t then, nor do I now, look upon that in a bad way. I never lived there, but most folks that I’ve met from Alabama are rock-solid patriots and decent folks.

I thought the lack of a gun registration was a near-universal thing? Virginia doesn’t have a gun registration (yet). Are there a lot of states that require you to register your guns? The feds are supposed to wipe their database after they do the background checks, so they aren’t keeping a registration.

How interesting how he sneaks that little item in.

“Someone may purchase 10 firearms legally, go out and shoot them, then they transfer that firearm not from dealer to dealer but individual to individual,” said Watson.

Actually, he’s probably not smart enough to know this, but this is federal law that applies to all states. An individual can sell a gun to an individual.

BATFE should be the name of a convenience store: Bubba's Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.. The only thing the government should have to do with any of these is issues revolving around fraud issues. i.e., purity or mechanical operation. Most of those issues should be handled by the individual states in any case.

Alabama is a bit different. We like to be left alone. Except in the big cities, stuff is pretty simple. Not a big hassle to get things done. We are always being told that our local governments are “lax” in their rules. We like it that way. Besides, everyone knows everyone else so it’s not easy to push people around. We don’t care how everyone else does it. Leave us alone. We are very patriotic, friendly and heavily armed. Come visit anytime, but don’t think you can change us.

I have long suspected that the dirty little secret of the “gun pipeline” to the streets of places like Chicago is that gang members are using their extended family members to procure weapons in this manner.
