The coronavirus epidemic could spread to about two-thirds of the worlds population if it cannot be controlled, according to Hong Kongs leading public health epidemiologist.
His warning came after the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said recent cases of coronavirus patients who had never visited China could be the tip of the iceberg.
Prof Gabriel Leung, the chair of public health medicine at Hong Kong University, said the overriding question was to figure out the size and shape of the iceberg. Most experts thought that each person infected would go on to transmit the virus to about 2.5 other people. That gave an attack rate of 60-80%.
Sixty per cent of the worlds population is an awfully big number, Leung told the Guardian in London, en route to an expert meeting at the WHO in Geneva on Tuesday.
Even if the general fatality rate is as low as 1%, which Leung thinks is possible once milder cases are taken into account, the death toll would be massive.
He will tell the WHO meeting that the main issue is the scale of the growing worldwide epidemic and the second priority is to find out whether the drastic measures taken by China to prevent the spread have worked because if so, other countries should think about adopting them.
The Geneva meeting brings together more than 400 researchers and national authorities, including some participating by video conference from mainland China and Taiwan. With 99% of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country, but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world, the WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in his opening remarks. To date China has reported 42,708 confirmed cases, including 1,017 deaths, Tedros said.

The article is designed to scare people.
Those blasts of dilute bleach would seem likely to make people more susceptible, and cause widespread lung damage if they are concentrated enough to be even minimally effective.
Yup.
Remember the poster named Mother Abigail during the SARS time period (2003)?
Mother, your poster name is great, because The Stand is one of my favorite made-for-tv movies!
The Chicoms told WHO they were not including asymptomatic infections in their numbers yesterday which means their already questionable numbers are REALLY questionable at this point. I have never believed the Chicom numbers about their economies and I certainly don’t believe their CoronaV numbers.
I suspect their numbers could be 10-25X what they are reporting and you are probably in the ballpark. I hope Trump is preparing for the worse and get ahead of this incoming mess because the Democrats will hang it around his neck like Katrina and Bush.
Using the dubious numbers China is posting as tabulated by Johns Hopkins site, the death rate in Hubei is 32%, with only 39 deaths to 1724 recovered for 2.2% outside of it.
There are 27 recovered outside of China, with only 1 death. Technically 4%, but obviously sample size dominates.
The Chinese ran out of tests. Theyre telling the infected to stay inside and are now boarding and welding them up to keep them put. No hospital beds.
10-20x the reported numbers is likely.
If they told the truth:
All flights and borders would be shut down and travelers overseas would be reined home.
Economic collapse.
Food riots.
Military would have to thwart the civil unrest.
Better to lie and hope they can sort it out.
“The article is designed to scare people.”
What is your opinion on how this plays out here in the US? I don’t buy the “warmer spring weather will save us” bit, Florida, Texas, California and plenty of other very warm winter states get the flu just like the rest of us. The fact that we are letting plains fly in from China still to me says “Our government is clueless as to how dangerous this is or knows and figures it’s worth the risk”
Thanks for your reply - and I had no idea that your were a fellow MOT (not that such really makes a difference to this subject - the corona virus).
I agree (and have said on this and other threads) that we shouldn’t go around with our hair on fire. IOW, don’t get caught up in the media hype. But doing the prepping thing is smart (and also Biblical, but that’s for another day and topic), as is taking simple but effective precautions for this (and other) diseases. Stuff like washing your hands more often, keeping away from sick people as much as possible and keeping your (HaShem-given) immune system in the best possible condition.
I absolutely agree - we mere humans can only do so much...but we SHOULD do those things. The rest is in HaShem’s hands.
What is really frightening is how little anyone is paying attention to or even knowledgeable that this is happening. It is crazy to watch. Americans completely oblivious to what could, possibly be mayhem. Bring it up to someone, you will get that deer in the headlights look, some comment about how they dont watch the news or some vague comment about that thing in China.
Oops, sorry, I only now just looked at your homepage. So you’re not a MOT...but you’re definitely a righteous gentile. Thanks for everything.
“It’s all about managing risk, and hopefully in a way that reduces risk.”
when this was at 100 people I told everyone when it would reach 200, then 400, then 800 (dead)
The math is simple.
It will reach 1,600 dead by this weekend, if they don’t have a handle on it.
Past a certain point the mortality rate will increase because the hospitals treating the critically ill are already full.
The numbers are starting to get inaccurate because the hospitals are overcrowded so they are not getting to everyone.
They build a 1000-bed hospital in just days, and it was too small to handle just the increase of one day’s infect (+3000)
If they do not have it under control, and it continues to double every 3 or 4 days (maybe 5 days now) it could reach 1 million dead by April.
These people are f-ing delusional if they think they are going to keep the economic gears grinding while people are exponentially dropping like flies. Barring divine intervention, at minimum, Chinese economy is going down. 100% if they lift the quarantines.
I do not think it is that bad overall, but yes, in Wehan it is.
Like I said on the thread I quoted, it will be interesting to see what happens in a year.
Most masks are to prevent the wearer of the mask spreading what he has to others. They don’t have any real filtering abilities. Probably special ones do.
Masks are a waste of time and money for a disease that’s likely BL4. You’d need a full decon procedure when you got home and eye protection as well. Masks DO prevent your spreading it as much, which is why they’re mandated in China and elsewhere right now. A mask will keep your germy breath and snot to yourself ;)
Leaving shoes outside isn’t a bad idea. When I lived in the city I left mine just inside the dooor.
And yes, your shoes are usually filthy.
