Indians were fighting other Indians long before any Europeans set foot in North America. How did the Aztecs and Incas create their empires? During the Indian Wars of the 19th century, there were always some Indians on the side of the US Army (the battle of the Little Big Horn is a case in point).

When Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark on their voyage of discovery, they were supposed to encourage the Indians they encountered to live at peace with other tribes. This was a foreign concept to them. Their attitude was that if they didn't fight wars, they wouldn't know who to pick as their chiefs.

Yeah so when the scouts or “pony solder” Indians were tracking them, I am sure the Apaches on the run were understanding of this history.

Note that I said my wife is Apache. I think that rules out Mayan, Inca’s or Aztec client tribes helping Cortez for example.
