TAIPEI - Apples biggest iPhone maker Foxconn got approval to resume production at a key plant in China after being forced to shut it following the coronavirus outbreak, but only 10% of the factorys workforce has managed to return so far, a source told Reuters.
Taiwans Foxconn, the worlds largest contract electronics maker, got the green light to restart production in the eastern central Chinese city of Zhengzhou, said the person with direct knowledge of the matter. The company, however, has not yet been allowed to restart production in Shenzhen, a southern manufacturing hub, the source said.
The two factories together make up the bulk of Foxconns assembly lines for Apples iPhones, and the delays are likely to impact global shipments.
An Apple spokeswoman in Shanghai was not immediately available for comment.
About 16,000 people, or under 10% of Foxconns workforce in Zhengzhou have returned to the plant, the source said, adding that company executives were trying very hard to negotiate with authorities to resume production in other parts of China, including Kunshan, in southeastern Jiangsu province.
Our request to resume production (in Shenzhen) was disapproved. We need to improve our virus control measures for another check, said the person who declined to be identified because they are not authorised to speak publicly on the matter.
Shenzhen authorities will conduct checks at the plant again later this week, the person said.

NOT!
I think the coronavirus is the final knell to force Apple out of China. Trump started it with the tariffs and corona will get them out. Hopefully other US manufacturers will follow and enemy China will implode economically
Adding to the long list of reasons to avoid Apple ‘like the plague’.
Just imagine what will happen to these massive American companies (Apple, Amazon, Walmart, etc) if we have to shut down traffic to/from China due to pandemic-related concerns. Regional diversification of manufacturing will become paramount in a hurry.
That would be good.
Terrible in the short-term, probably good in the long-term.
Just wondering where newly returned manufacturing companies will relocate. I have seen manufacturing zones (quite rustic in every way along the train line corridors) suddenly go very upper residential due to the location near town.
In Houston with no zoning they will jack up townhomes right up to a steel mill or RR track.
The implosion of China will have negative consequences globally. Be careful what you wish for.
OK, they’re back to making iPhones.
How long can the corona virus survive on an inanimate surface? Will they be shipping phones before this time?
Agreed. But better for America though.
China said 5 days
“China said 5 days”
Come on, it’s China. They’ll tell you whatever makes them look good.
