We have local health districts in WA state.
They manage environmental issues, immunizations,senior services, homeless to name a few of their assigned tasks.
Every county in the US is a public health district and has a Public Health Office that handles disease/epidemic outbreaks, vaccinations and reviews school records for same, they also are responsible for food service licensing and inspection, etc.
