A few days a week back the Chinese were trying to patent the vaccine, even though Gilead Sciences had already patented it. There was a fight and then all of a sudden trials - so something off camera happened

it’s not clear Gilead patented it in China, which if they didn’t, the Chinese can patent it themselves in their own country ...there’s no such thing as reciprocal patents, so patents have to made in every country, or in groups of countries that agree to cooperate, like the EU ...
