I think it was at the end of the British first Afghan war that the British garrison, including women, children and Indian troops was promised safe passage from Kabul back to India. The Afghans slaughtered over 16,000 of them as they got to the Khyber Pass. One man made to India. Kipling offers to the wounded British soldier—save a bullet for yourself.

Ditto in Korea and Vietnam. I was an infantryman in Vietnam in 1971 when the press and the politicians had announced that the U.S. was withdrawing and the war had been turned over the the South Vietnamese. The North Vietnamese Army did not get the memo.
