I read it was just the rumor of a possible future supply shortage (denied by stores and manufacturers) that caused a rush on TP and those instant noodles that caused the depletion.
People and rumors are like people and gossip, anything can result- usually the worst.

I’ve got a Chinese friend who lives here in Nashville. She keeps sending me some of the most horrible stuff accusing the US of biowarfare.
She wasn’t aware Dr. Peng had a virology lab right in Wuhan and was studying Coronavirus.
She sent me one that claimed the Chinese military had dug up biohazard containers in the floor of the US consulate, and it had pictures of containers with dirt splattered on them.
So first I questioned the source. Then I pointed out that no US consulate is likely to have dirt floors. And then I found the biohazard containers picture using Google. And it was a stock picture but didn’t have the dirt splatter on it.
It’s one thing to wonder and speculate if it was biowarfare, but to actually generate rumors accusing a country of it, with fake pictures is pretty low. It doesn’t get much worse than that.

NYTimes reporter in Wuhan says the government has requisitioned the hotel she’s in for a quarantine site.
Doubt the CCP would do that to a hotel used by foreign media unless they were desperate.
