So the UK is betting battery technology will drastically change so they are made of something okay for the environment, cheap, and readily available. Okay; I hope that works out. But what is the point?

But what is the point? Change for change's sake? I think most folks believe we will eventually run out of fossil fuels so getting an alternative in place as soon as reasonably possible is prudent. Yes; fossil fuels still create the electric power needed to recharge e-vehicles but that can change as well when technology comes with other ways like safe fusion or something.
