The licensees we worked with in Japan (not Disney) were more than happy to write a permission letter in cases like this. They were smart enough to realize that events of this nature generated goodwill and sales from which they DID make money.

We had only one malcontent which wanted his pound of flesh as well. He backed off when we told him how things worked in Japan and we would give him the payment and release him to find someone else to represent him going forward. He got his wire transfer for a little over $200 but never did business in Japan again,

Correction: He considered backing off, but the client he represented wanted his pound of flesh anyway.
