They had a suggested donation of $15. They are extremely lucky Disney did not ask for willful violation money IIRC $750 as a minimum to $150,000. Ask ASCAP or RIAA how they feel about commercial playing of music. Ask a copyright attorney what happens if you choose not to pursue copyright violations.

Um, no.

If a teacher showed the movie in class, then yes; educational fair use.

But fees were paid for admission to the movie; that makes it a for-profit venture and the payment is due.

You don’t have to like intellectual property law and royalty payments, but they are the law, and for good reason.

Even a cover band in a local bar owes royalties to the copyright holders for songs they cover in their set list. If the establishment has an ASCAP sticker on the door; they enforce the payments.

I believe if the PA is anon-profit educational organization, they can tell Disney to pound sand, because there’s a explicit exemption in the copyright law for those organizations.

There is no force in America that is as greedy as the education system. It’s slavering demands for ever larger piles of cash (that are largely squandered) know absolutely no limits.

I’m OK with this. It’s all about protecting your intellectual property.

I work with a national youth character development organization. We have some trademarked things like logo’s etc. with strong branding use guidelines.

Trademark law is very clear that if we don’t protect the trademark, we may lose the rights to such protection.

$250 is pretty reasonable for a movie they charged full theater rates to sit on a gym floor to watch.

Actually the primary purpose was a kid drop off so mommy and daddy could have a night out. The showing of The Lion King was just to keep the kids occupied watching the TV

If they had just turned the TV on and let it play random cartoons there wouldn’t be a problem. But stick in a DVD and it becomes copyright infringement?

Stuff like this is why people have no respect for copyright laws.

Dear Disney, please find enclosed a check for $250. Rest assured, the students in our district will be persuaded to never watch a Disney product again! Sincerely, The District Superintendent of Education

“ Disney is famous for this kind of $#!+. ”

Yep. Only outfit worse is Harley Davidson. They’ll sue their own dealers over “infringement”.

Exactly so. In a similar vein I had some fun back in the early to mid eighties when the MSM was calling Reagan the "Teflon President." Teflon is a registered trademark of DuPont and they are required to defend it or lose trademark protection as happened to Bayer with both aspirin and heroin.

So I made a little form letter that, anytime I saw the phrase "Teflon President" in a newspaper, I would send to DuPont and they would send the paper a cease and desist order and the paper would be forced to publish a retraction with an explanation. I would get a kick out of seeing this as I was easily amused back in the day.

A suggested donation is not the same as charging admission....they should have no case!!!
