Lack of travel history in several confirmed cases convinces Professor Yuen Kwok-yung of local human-to-human transmission
A top microbiologist has declared a community outbreak of the deadly coronavirus in Hong Kong as a government adviser revealed mainland Chinese entering the city could be quarantined in hotels or public facilities under compulsory restrictions taking effect on Saturday.
The dreaded confirmation of a local spread came a day after the government said all travellers from the mainland, including Hong Kong residents, would be placed on a mandatory 14-day quarantine as part of its escalated response to the contagion.
The citys administration was expected to provide more details on how that would be executed on Thursday afternoon amid uncertainty over the manpower and resources at its disposal to impose effective measures.
Professor Yuen Kwok-yung, a leading microbiologist and infectious-diseases expert at the University of Hong Kong, said many of the 21 patients found to be infected in Hong Kong had not visited the mainland recently.
He added it was certain a local outbreak had started and human-to-human transmission was taking place within the city. Yuen warned every measure must be taken to minimise the spread, including further border closures.
Six people in the city have been diagnosed with the coronavirus over the past two days, five of whom had not left the city recently. Of the 21 cases in total, eight were believed to have no travel history relevant to the coronavirus...

4 Plagues Are Marching Across Asia: Coronavirus, African Swine Fever, H5N1 Bird Flu & H1N1 Swine Flu
The coronavirus outbreak that is raging all over China right now has been making headlines on a daily basis all over the globe, and rightly so. At this point we dont know if it will ultimately become a horrifying global pandemic that will affect tens of millions of people, but what we do know is that the virus spreads very easily and the number of cases has been rising at an exponential rate. Meanwhile, three other plagues have also been marching across Asia, and most people in the western world dont even realize that this is happening. What I am about to share with you in this article is quite chilling, and the months ahead will be very dark if these plagues continue to spread.

It’s complicated.

I wonder how many cases of Coronavirus have waltzed over our open borders courtesy of the Leftists. We’ll know soon.
I agree with you. Those “90 flights a day coming in from china” in the last few weeks are going to cause a breakout soon here.
Plus just wait till these 4 viruses mix it up and become stronger.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Yep. Contrary to popular belief, I do sleep.
Fitfully.
So far, our cases are doubling weekly.
If this continues, in about a month, people will begin to freak out.
It will, of course, be way too late by then.
Same in Singapore, human-to-human transmission. In that case, it was a conference where one of the attendees flew in from Wuhan.
The thing about new and not-yet-understood diseases is that if you wait too long, the window of opportunity to prevent a mass outbreak can easily close. Here we have the WHO now answering to China, a country that (understandably) does not want to be isolated from the world over this...rather than being cautious, even if it means slightly slower I-Phone deliveries. Very soon, it will be a lot more than just delayed I-Phones, as Asia will slowly be isolated from trading with the rest of the world.
This reminds me of California in the 1980s when they had detected their dreaded crop enemy, tiny fruit flies, which can permanently destroy their agriculture if they get embedded (hence their border inspection points). They have a government department that advises the governor on how to respond to fruit flies that are captured in traps, which they use for detection. In the case I remember, they told the governor it was time for aerial spraying of a limited area. But the Sierra Club doesn’t like aerial spraying, so they talked Governor Jerry Brown into the much-less-effective method of ground-based spraying. Needless to say, the infestation grew and threatened to embed. At that point Governor Brown was told that it’s now or never - and so the aerial spraying started, and it was much more widespread, and probably in higher concentration (damaging cars and getting people sick), than would have been needed had he listed to his experts in the first place. But they did manage to kill it off.
I knew it.
According to WHO, the first case in Hong Kong was reported Jan 23: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/situation-reports/
This fits with the 2-week incubation period.
The first case in the US was reported about that same time.
The 565 deaths reported so far (almost all in China), might be significantly understated, and not only because deaths in Hubei (the province where Wuhan is located) are understated due to people dying who were never diagnosed.
It appears likely that virtually every other province in China is suppressing death counts. How else to explain this: Zhejiang province east of Hubei has reported 954 confirmed cases. They’ve also reported 94 recoveries. But they’ve reported zero deaths. Zero.
In fact, the highest death count thus far in any other province is three despite almost 1/3 of the confirmed cases being in provinces other than Hubei. Are the leaders of those provinces afraid to report their deaths, which are almost certainly higher than zero to three? Are they being told by the government to suppress them? Or are there really almost no deaths outside of Hubei province?
I suspect the actual death count is at least 700 and probably higher, with it about to accelerate in the rest of China, whether reported or not.
So far confirmed cases have been doubling about every four days. Assuming an 8-day incubation period, there are already at least 100,000 people in China carrying the virus and possibly two to four times that number.
