I read somewhere that every pneumonia death was attributed to the flu.
Been a while since I read that so I’d have to look for it again.
There are currently 20,626 confirmed cases worldwide, including 426 fatalities.

Yep, it is how the #'s are reported (stats)...the U.S. is reporting "flu-deaths" and "flu-related pneumonia" deaths separately....China may be only reporting "flu deaths". For example, 2 weeks ago in the U.S. (latest data) there were 191 "flu deaths", but 1916 "flu-related pneumonia" deaths. See "chart data" here for past #'s:
