I’m about same age. Sometimes I get a lot of crap on FR for being a New Yorker. But my public high school and private college had rifle teams when I was in school.
We had a shooting club at my high school as well.

It’s ignorance. Some people hear ‘New York’ and NYC comes to mind. It’s a big state.
I was stationed at West Point for a summer and we had a great time on weekends traveling around that part of the state and along the Hudson. One would never know that NYC was just down the road.

I regularly visit mid- and upper-New York state, and I know they are NOT like NY City dwellers. Uh uh! The flyover people and land are great.
Would love to have experienced the Borscht Belt in its heyday.
