“NFL teams have recovered only one of 29 onside kick attempts this season. ... But they also have made it nearly impossible for a team to regain possession by recovering an onside kick. In 2017, before the new kickoff rules were enacted, NFL teams were successful on 11 of 57 onside kicks.Nov 16, 2019”

Got it.

However, there is even less chance of loosing if you have the ball with 4 downs to go, while the other team is out of timeouts and the clock is under 2 minutes. Take a knee 4 times. Why take the chance even if the odds are miniscule? Scoring 6 more points when you are already ahead doesn’t enhance the “W”.

fans come to see scoring. i have seen players break away and run along the goal line to click off seconds and then cross when they are threatened, but up by four then eleven means a two score touch downs game in two minutes...

i hate taking a knee during the game... but it is the safe way to play.
