“He should have gone out of bounds instead of scoring.

The only chance the Niners had was to get the ball back score quickly and get an onsides kick. If he didn’t score, KC simply runs out the clock.”

Exactly. I believe in one of the college football playoff games a running back was off for the races to the end zone, but fell down on purpose. By doing so, his team simply kneeled down for a couple plays, and by doing so they simply ran out the clock (the other team had already used up their 3 time outs and could do nothing to stop the clock).

Had he simply run it into the end zone, this would have been the only possible way for the other team to score, get the ball back with an onside kick off, then hail mary for the win. Was looking for the announcers to mention this.

I have a feeling the Niners thought that very thing and once they saw he got the first down, they basically let him score.

NFL teams have recovered only one of 29 onside kick attempts this season. ... But they also have made it nearly impossible for a team to regain possession by recovering an onside kick. In 2017, before the new kickoff rules were enacted, NFL teams were successful on 11 of 57 onside kicks.Nov 16, 2019
