I’ve had (thankfully) little contact with the law and judges. I wasn’t aware that one could “refuse” to go to court to be arraigned. Is court optional now?

Two points:
In my wildest youth (yep it was wild) I would never do something like this while under the influence.
Alcohol or drugs are not a valid excuse for illegal behavior.
