We need to get rid of all other federal taxes and switch back to tariffs.

Tariffs are the best kind of tax.

Thanks for posting. I didn’t understand why the tariffs didn’t result in a big consumer price increase.

With the imposition of tariffs, the supply chains sought alternative sources. Consider the price shock given no alternative supply for a sole source vender suffering a crisis shutting down manufacturing and export.

Actually whoops— just wait until a medical supplies shortfall propagates through the supply chain. What percentage of pharmaceuticals and vaccines are sourced from China?

So many people were against this and they had long lists of facts about tariffs not working.

Well, nobody convinced the Donald.

They simply missed what he was doing with them. They were sticks and carrots to get a better deal.

He wasn’t doing what they opposed—long term tariffs as making government money.

Just a tool to get something better.

Read an article a few months ago that many of the cut-rate pharmaceuticals sold in Mexico were among those manufactured in China containing contaminants. (I think it involved antilipidemics containing carcinogens.) It would be nice if some reputable entity took up the manufacturing slack in a timely manner. Not likely, though. “To make an omelette, one must break eggs.” (Bhowani Junction?)

The Donald, bless his soul, stands on the shoulders of Pat Buchanan who was vilified and considered an economic kook for championing the use of tariffs back when he was politically active. Pat Buchanan is an unsung hero in my book for having been 100% correct about tariffs as an effective economic tool. Haven’t seen him lately on TV. Hope he is well and enjoying retirement, if that is what he is doing.

Thanks for reminding us about Pat Buchanan, one of our conservative pioneers. Pat is now 81, semi-retired, has his own web site....and is a Trump supporter.
