Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced on Friday that the coronavirus has been declared a public health emergency in the U.S. Beginning at 5 p.m. on Feb. 2, U.S. citizens returning from Wuhan will be subject to quarantine.
Azar said that President Trump is also temporarily suspending entry into the U.S. for foreign nationals who pose a risk of transmitting the virus.

Anyone considering the genetic susceptibility to this virus? How many non Asiatics have been documented to be infected or died? By now it should have infected many others especially the Westerners who live and work in Wusan.
The John Hopkins site is still reporting fewer than 150 cases outside of China. Far and away, most of these are people who traveled directly from China. It looks like it is currently being contained within China.
The escalating number of cases in China is far less worrisome to me than the ratio of “deaths” to “recovered”. It’s still a few weeks early to draw conclusions, but 50% overall mortality doesn’t look good.
Unfortunately, the lack of confirmed cases in Africa and Latin America may be simply due to a lack of test kits. The governments there may see no upside to acquisition of test kits and tracking cases.
“interim guidance from. cdc. 25-32% icu rate 11-15% case fatality rate of those who need ICU”
That gives a general mortality rate from 2.75% to 4.8%.
That’s based on China and is hopefully biased in the direction of safety over expedience. Things in the US will hopefully be better if we get a significant outbreak here. Hopefully.
Seems like an imperfect bioweapon got loose as they were perfecting it.
hopefully but for now we have to go with the data we have
Those are old numbers. Todays numbers include no new deaths and the number of recovered has surpassed the number of deaths, but only a couple hundred new cases have been confirmed versus nearly 2000 yesterday.
On face value that’s GREAT news, but I’m calling Bull Schiff.
Returning hard facts to the top.
Thats so considerate they are giving them all a few days to scatter before the rules take effect. They really DO care! /s

yeah... really...
“Is the caption-writer stupid and uneducated? Or playing around? Or just harried and didn’t even think about it?”
Or, perhaps, he doesn’t live in the same reality as you and the reference escaped him entirely.
They have run out of test kits. Some reports came out about it yesterday
An MD on another thread.
Jives with an MD we know that got info this afternoon.
She was given information on quarantine procedures/etc.
I wouldn’t swear that on a bible right now. But I’d certainly bet on it in vegas given what we’ve seen with this virus’s sequence anomalies.
“hopefully but for now we have to go with the data we have”
Agreed.
Which one caused disease ?
We need to be raising cain with the airlines still flying out of China.
Example:
Delta currently operates 42 weekly flights between the U.S. and China, including daily service connecting Beijing and Detroit and Seattle, and Shanghai and Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles and Seattle
42 x 250 seats = 10,500 passengers
That is a lot of people to try and quarantine.
“The flu has a much more higher mortality rate and is a lot more dangerous. 8,200 people have died and 140,000 people have been hospitalized during the 2019-2020 flu season. This media hype is the medias attempt to destroy the economy to help with the Dem election chances.”
Oh, and btw, this disease has an R(0) (i.e. ability to spread) that is somewhere around twice as high as the flu. So we have a disease which could infect twice the number of people, and which is somewhere between 20 and 50 times as lethal (that we know of). Ignoring or poo-pooing this is not a recipe for successfully fighting the spread of infection.
He’s a Brit. My money would be that he is exercising dry wit, which is not always appreciated in every circle. “Playing around” would be the closest option of those given.
I think that it is a hoot.
“They have run out of test kits. Some reports came out about it yesterday”
Well, crap.
“The sudden disclosure eight days ago that the Chinese are looking at AIDS vaccines to fight this”
Does an HIV vaccine even exist? I would guess they are looking at HIV antivirals.
But thanks for your comments today — really helpful since I’m a couple hours late to the topic.
Todays numbers include no new deaths and the number of recovered has surpassed the number of deaths .....
On face value thats GREAT news, but Im calling Bull Schiff.
Death has been working overtime, and was entitled to 24 hours off. It would fit in with a Monte Python skit.
