The overall crime rate in Orlando is 117% higher than the national average. For every 100,000 people, there are 15.37 daily crimes that occur in Orlando. Orlando is safer than 4% of the cities in the United States. In Orlando you have a 1 in 18 chance of becoming a victim of any crime.

Demings was appointed as chief of the OPD in December 2007, becoming the first woman to lead the department. As chief, she was credited with reducing violent crime in Orlando. She retired from the position effective June 1, 2011, after serving with the OPD for 27 years.
