If they had not delayed things, the defenders could have finished Friday and forced the vote on witnesses before the Dims were ready with Bolton. Or so it seems.

the Dims were ready with Bolton The Dims have been ready with Bolton since the day after they voted in lock step to impeach the President. They've been waiting for the right time to spring it.
