‘Draconian’ travel curbs needed to halt spread of virus: scientists

Governments need to implement “draconian” travel curbs to stop a mystery coronavirus in China becoming a global epidemic, a team of experts mapping the outbreak said Monday.

Scientists at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) presented a briefing warning that the spread of the deadly SARS-like virus that first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan was accelerating.

“We have to be prepared that this particular epidemic may be about to become a global epidemic,” said Gabriel Leung, head of the team.

“Substantial, draconian measures limiting population mobility should be taken sooner, rather than later.”

Leung leads a group of researchers who are mapping the virus, which has so far infected more than 2,700 people in China and killed 81 people...

“We are expecting to see epicentres of self-sustaining epidemics in these other major city clusters on the mainland,” Leung predicted...

The Wuhan virus has been detected in a dozen other countries — as far afield as North America and Europe — but only via a handful of people who travelled primarily from the epicentre in Wuhan.

The latest models from HKU warned that the number of actual infections was likely to be much higher than the official tolls, which only account for those who have been found and have tested positive.

HKU believes as many as 44,000 people may have been infected as of Saturday after evidence emerged suggesting people may be infectious even when they are not showing symptoms.

Leung said the number of infections would likely double every six days, peaking in April and May for those places currently dealing with an outbreak, although effective public health measures could bring that rate down.

President Donald Trump on Monday said the United States was offering to help China in combatting the spread of a virus that has sparked fears of global contagion.

"We are in very close communication with China concerning the virus," Trump tweeted.

"Very few cases reported in the USA, but strongly on the watch. We have offered China and President Xi any help that is necessary. Our experts are extraordinary!"

THE World Health Organization today said the global risk from the deadly virus in China was “high”, admitting an error in its previous reports that said it was “moderate”.

The UN health body said in a situation report published late yesterday that the risk was “very high in China, high at regional level and high at global level”.

I kind of wonder if we can add a “0” to all the numbers coming out of China. The Chinese Government has a habit of minimizing bad news.

We will know in 2 weeks where this is headed.

We bought 1/3 cow last fall and I’m going to a prepper store an hour away to buy 5 gallon pails of rice and beans for safety sake.

If this should hit there will be a run on the stores like you have never seen.

If there are still flights flying in and out of china, the government’s actions do not match their words.

Expect mass starvation and deprivation

I recall more than one of their media lackeys arguing exactly this back when ebola was raging through Liberia and Sierra Leone and modest measures like suspending flights were being discussed. In the minds of these leftists, the past sins of slavery were worth exposing our entire population to a deadly virus.

“If this should hit there will be a run on the stores like you have never seen.”

Americans alive today have never known truly hard times. Never been truly hungry or destitute as third world countries have experienced

If they see people dropping watch out and food starting to dry up I expect serious problems.

Heck a 5 inch snow storm brings out panic.

We have been blessed and are babies as a result.

Common sense would have required that flights from China would have been halted immediately, but common sense no longer reigns.

there are thousands and thousands and thousands of students from communist china already in USA, also visitors and workers (taking American jobs at American, socalled, corporations)

also cases have been breaking out all over the world
as 5 million people got out of the epicenter Chinese city already

Perhaps we can lend them some neutron bombs to exterminate some of their population centers. Eugenicists would fly the planes.

Yep. PC culture dictates any restriction of any infected group to be "racist" or some other SJW buzzword.

Equality of infection is the only PC solution.

Right you are. And as others have noted, even a sensible travel ban would cause all kinds of complaints.

There is a saying. “Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.”

Let’s not waste a crisis. This is an opportunity to get people accustomed to draconian measures.

Apparently in Wuhan proper it’s kind of mad max right now. Some parts w/o electicity, everyone hungry and in their homes.

All those huge apartment buildings are breeding zones for this.
