Wuhan mayor says willing to resign if it helps contain virus

The mayor of the Chinese city where a deadly virus broke out says he would be willing to resign if it helps the government contain its spread.

Mayor Zhou Xianwang told state broadcaster CCTV that both he and Wuhan’s Communist Party secretary are willing to take responsibility for closing off the city, including being removed from office.

As the virus spread through China and overseas, transportation links to the city were cut last week to prevent more people from leaving.

Zhou also responded to allegations that the city was slow to disclose information in the early days of the outbreak, saying local governments are restricted from releasing information about infectious diseases without authorization.

The local Communist Party secretary outranks the mayor. Still the fact both are offering to resign shows how grave things are in Wuhan.

Does he have a $32 billion stash in his basement like that other Chinese mayor?

When it comes to saving human life, the Chinese government faces an acute challenge.

We should wish it the best.

Oldeconomybuyer :" The mayor of the Chinese city where a deadly virus broke out
says he would be willing to resign if it helps the government contain its spread."

Quite the contrary, he needs to stay.
There is need for experienced govt. officials
who know the local resources and can command with leadership.
Nothing can be gained by his departure too !

Perhaps seppuku?
Maybe jumping into a volcano will stop it?

Mass.
Hysteria.

So much for public education.

As conditions worsen in China ,the Communist regime becomes more Stalinist. Those two will eventually be arrested and shot.

If he resigns he can leave ... thereby reducing the chance it will spread to him.

You're assuming that he's not corrupt. That's not a good assumption in a Communist country.

I wonder what happens, just for the sake of conversation, that this is quite a bit worse than we are being told, and it flat takes China out?

Somehow I don’t think the mayor of Wuhan is in charge of the Bio-Weapons Lab that resides in the province. Which is the most likely source for this outbreak.
I think all the pics and video of people eating bats and snakes suddenly flooding social media is nothing more than a smokescreen.

Seeing what Hillary and the Bidens get away with, I wouldn't let American politicians off the hook either.s

We should wish it the best.

Of course. Although, I am curious as to whether this is due to a laboratory leak or an animal vector in the Wuhan market.

“The mayor of the Chinese city where a deadly virus broke out says he would be willing to resign if it helps the government contain its spread.”

How is his resignation going to help contain the virus? It is a very weird statement.

Agree. This isn’t an “us vs them” moment. This is a “let’s hope they fix this before it gets here in large #s moment.”

I’m sick and tired of China being responsible for tanking my investments. Earlier it tanked because of the tariff stuff and now that’s being taken care of (thank you Trump economic team) we have this virus that they’ve introduced. Dow down over 400 this morning “due to Chinese virus outbreak”. WTH?
