Containing new coronavirus may not be feasible, experts say, as they warn of possible sustained global spread

Some infectious disease experts are warning that it may no longer be feasible to contain the new coronavirus circulating in China. Failure to stop it there could see the virus spread in a sustained way around the world and even perhaps join the ranks of respiratory viruses that regularly infect people.

“The more we learn about it, the greater the possibility is that transmission will not be able to be controlled with public health measures,” said Dr. Allison McGeer, a Toronto-based infectious disease specialist who contracted SARS in 2003 and who helped Saudi Arabia control several hospital-based outbreaks of MERS.

If that’s the case, she said, “we’re living with a new human virus, and we’re going to find out if it will spread around the globe.” McGeer cautioned that because the true severity of the outbreak isn’t yet known, it’s impossible to predict what the impact of that spread would be, though she noted it would likely pose significant challenges to health care facilities...

Don’t worry, though - the virus can only survive only 2 to 3 hours outside the host.

Unlike SARS, MERS, the common cold, and most other coronaviruses, 2019-nCoV has the ability to encapsulate and has demonstrated survival times of at least 6 days on hard surfaces.

Not only is an infected individual capable of passing on the disease before they develop symptoms, but bodies remain highly contagious long after death.

There is one documented (in the medical journal Lancet) case of an individual infecting 5 others, so R0 is at least 5. The Daily Mail newspaper in London posted a YouTube video earlier today of someone (in full HAZMAT gear) who claimed to be a nurse in Wuhan who stated that the R0 was 14. The Daily Mail translated her remarks to say that there were 90,000 cases in Wuhan, but native Chinese speakers have since confirmed that what she said was 90,000 dead. Your mileage may vary (YMMV).

Since October 1, 2020 when the virus appeared to have crossed over to humans, more that 1.15 million individuals have flown out of Wuhan to other countries.

Comparisons of this virus to the Spanish flu, SARS, MERS, or other well-documented outbreaks are not accurate.

That's not to say that it is Armageddon or the Zombie Apocalypse, just that it is probably worse than any previous coronavirus.

I’ve heard “envelope” a lot, but not the six day number.

I was kidding around with the 2-3 hour “life” of the Epirus outside the host because the turn-around times for long-haul jets is probably in that range. I was speculating that surfaces in international long-haul aircraft could be a major transmission vector. Of course, if those infected international passengers transferred to U.S. connecting short-haul flights, those aircraft could be contaminated, too. Planes are obviously not disinfected at each turn-around.
