By turning back caravans, Mexico is acting as Trump’s border wall, critics say
Los Angeles Times ^ | JAN. 24, 2020 3:21 PM | By PATRICK J. MCDONNELL, KATE LINTHICUM

On its southern border, Mexico is detaining record numbers of migrants. Human rights advocates complain of dismal conditions in overcrowded detention centers, where migrants are forced to sleep outside or in kitchens or hallways.

Among López Obrador’s major policy shifts in immigration was to bow to U.S. demands that Mexico house asylum-seekers from Central America and elsewhere who are awaiting hearings in U.S. immigration courts. The arrangement was a Trump administration request that López Obrador’s widely unpopular predecessor, Enrique Peña Nieto, had flatly rejected.

More than 50,000 non-Mexicans seeking asylum or other relief in the United States have been expelled to Mexico by U.S. authorities under the so-called Remain in Mexico program. Their presence has become a major burden for Mexico’s northern border towns. Many sent back to Mexico have been victims of kidnapping, extortion and other crimes, according to migrants and rights groups.

I maintain this qualifies as Mexico "paying" for the "wall".

Why don’t these “human right advocates” go help these people in their own country, rather than bringing them to a foreign country?

Bush could have accomplished this.
George HW Bush.
Back in 1989.
But he wanted to turn the USA into North Mexico instead.

"I maintain this qualifies as Mexico "paying" for the "wall". "

Sounds like an ongoing down payment.

Hard to believe, but so far I must say Obrador has been the best thing to happen for Mexico in a long time. I think personally Trump and Obrador respect each other in a way that wasn’t possible with other Mexican leaders.

I don’t see any “migrants” from Costa Rica or Panama. Why is that? Probably because their governments aren’t run by kleptocrats.

I think Obrador is smart enough to know and understand that Trump was fully prepared to economically cripple his country.

Trade and commerce with the U.S. is something that Mexico cannot live without and of all the countries in the world, there is not one that would be more susceptible to our sanctions.

Trump is polite, affirming, and smiles, but the message is clear that Trump means what he says and does not make empty promises. He has to be one of the most resolute and determined Presidents in the history of our nation! All of the President’s in my half-century would have folded on dozens of objectives facing the kind of pressure, attacks, and resistance that we have seen in the last three years.

Trump just finds another way to go around the obstructionist and gets it done. I cannot come close to putting into words how impressed I have been with not only Trump, but his cabinet and advisors. It is very obvious to me why all of them have been so successful in life. They do not take “no” for an answer!

liberals while screaming about the law, the law, the law, want to give ILLEGALS driver’s licensees, allow them to vote- won’t prosecute them when they are found with STOLEN SS numbers- or stolen identities- and will give ILLEGALS sanctuary-

Hey liberals- don’t you dare preach to us about the law! Hypocrites!
