Today, the gay community is facing another crisis that we’re not talking about and that elected officials are once again ignoring. Scores of gay men are addicted to crystal methamphetamine. The drug, which can change the chemical composition of the brain in chronic users, is extremely addictive. And just like during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 90s, resources are paltry, government support is virtually nonexistent and an aura of denial surrounds the crisis.
Gay men are more likely to try meth than straight men. One explanation for this could be that gay men struggle with acceptance in ways straight men don’t have to. Growing up gay, and being forced to keep that a secret for fear of family rejection or neighborhood bullying can create huge insecurities and issues with intimacy.
My best friend was rejected by his family for being gay and beaten in the streets of his hometown in Mexico. He had to flee to the United States for refuge. As he grew older, he became more and more desperate to belong to a community. He sought out men on gay apps, and ended up falling for a handsome young man who was addicted to meth. He fostered my friend’s addiction. The initial drug use was about acceptance and remaining relevant in an overly sexualized culture. Now, despite recent interventions by me and other people, my friend is overcome by the daily ritual of obtaining and using crystal meth. He’s a different person than the one I’ve known for over 25 years.
There are many stories like this. The truth is, using meth can create a twisted sense of camaraderie among users.
Hookup apps like Grindr make finding meth — as well as men to use it with — fast and easy.

Well, it’s now a crime to offer or make available any treatment that might ameliorate the conditions that make the gay lifestyle such a challenge. Your comments seem to cover the situation quite well but have little chance of acceptance in the alternate lifestyle community. Those comments offend one’s dignity, don’t you know.
Dittos. We used to help the mentally ill, now we encourage them to hurt themselves.
We have such a shortage of gay meth addicts we need to import them from Mexico. This is what the end looks like. This is decadence on steroids.
Hell. You wanna know about communities with meth issues, just ask.
Where I live, there are many a person who believe 3am to be the perfect time to mow their lawns.
Especially if they’ve recently managed to steal a lawn mower.
Because some gays have gotten themselves into a meth.

These are personal problems of choice. So are the homeless by choice.
They have to chose right and make the change. It isn’t up to the taxpayer.

Scores? Like groups of 20? There are “scores” of crystal meth addicts, not necessarily gay, right outside San Francisco City Hall. Another example of urinalists who don’t know what words mean, or don’t care to find out.
I can no longer distinguish between fact and satire.
Never personally responsible for their own voluntary decisions and actions.
Break a taboo once and it becomes easier the next time.

This is a public health crisis... why?
Every case is a tragedy, but 100 people is not even a blip on the radar.

Clearly a multi-billion dollar federal program to Save the Gays is called for and there’s only ONE THING stopping it — Orange Man!
Once again, it’s our fault for the maladies resulting from the choice of others. Yet another attempt to induce guilt from the normal crowd so normal people will subsidize the lifestyle of others all while these people attack us as homophobic and shake their fist at God.
A couple thoughts: Someone said there is a god-sized hole in every person’s soul which, if we don’t fill it with God, we will try to fill it with something else. Also, much of the gay lifestyle hinges on pure sexual adventures. Sex was supposed to be an accessory to healthy relationships, not the replacement. When your whole relationship is built on ephemeral physical arousal, it gets harder and harder to achieve, hence the need for chemical help. Finally, the gay community has a pretty high income level per capita. How about putting some of that money towards helping your community instead of throwing it at quixotic Mayor Pete’s campaign?
No no no silly! It’s Donald Trump‘s fault, personally. Not our beloved government’s fault!
