The Chinese government has quarantined the city of Wuhan and plans to shut down the airport and public transportation within hours amid an outbreak of the coronavirus, according to reports on the countrys social networks. The virus has been linked to at least 17 deaths and has sickened over 500 others.
Other countries' health agencies and governing bodies have issued warnings to travelers including the U.K., which advised against "all but essential travel" to Wuhan, which is where the virus was first detected. Several countries have implemented enhanced screening measures at airports for flights arriving from the Wuhan region as China faces scrutiny over what officials knew about the outbreak and when they discovered it. Deadly contagion in China spreads to the US.
For weeks the country's health officials maintained that the number of people infected remained at 41, with minimal fatalities, but as more cases emerged and the death toll spiked fears of a cover-up began to surface. Top officials in China have reportedly warned lower-level officials to not cover up the spread of the virus, which is now said to be transmissible between humans.

Excellent epidemiological assessment.
Outside the tier 1-3 cities, China is a third world country with third world food, health, and medical conditions.
Also the virus is capable of mutating to a higher mortality V2.
So, about 200 people. Chump change in terms of China. They shoot that many political prisoners before 10:00.
Downplay it. But a mere hundred years ago, the Spanish Flu infected over 500 million people and killed 50 million. A massive outbreak is nothing to sneeze at.
The quarantine thing came too rate.
Mortality rate for Spanish Flu was closer to 20%.
More than a billion people living in mostly cities; poor sanitation, water treatment, major pollution...
nailed on the Pillar of shame for eternity.
Excellent.
“Downplay it. But a mere hundred years ago, the Spanish Flu infected over 500 million people and killed 50 million. A massive outbreak is nothing to sneeze at”
Can’t compare back then to today. Nearly all countries have 1000 x greater sanitation, more hospitals, health care workers an clinics per capita and greater access to knowledge via internet.
China has so many more people per square mile. Look at the city they quarantined, it has over 11 million and no one has even heard of it before.
Years ago the U.S. had an outbreak of “swine flu”. It was recognized that most flu variants, including this one, originated in China. The explanation at the time was that there were still lots of households which had pigs cohabiting with people. This was blamed on most of the flu variants.
So... a worldwide pandemic will kill 150 million.
But it won't ever get close to that.
I’m thinking the situation in Wuhan is far worse than they are admitting.
If China is taking this level of action, then the problem is worse than what has been reported. There are also alot of flights leaving China on a daily basis.
“why do these weird sars or whatever-like viruses originate in china?”
Scientific methods have advanced so much it’s easy now to recognize and characterize novel viruses.
In the past it’d just be a few people dying of the flu.
Now it can be studied at quite detailed levels.

What many people don't know is that China is the 3rd largest country in the world - smaller than Canada and larger than the US. They think it's this postage stamp-sized country with people literally crowded shoulder-to-shoulder.
Yes, but the eastern 1/4 holds 4/5 of the population, right?
Not that density matters for this discussion.
Density does not create zoonotic illness. It’s the mixing of the 3 stages of meat production with all the people who go to the markets.
True, but it is much easier to spread now with global air traffic. Also, the medical systems would break down if a large pandemic strikes.
Let’s not forget, 25% of population of the world (An estimated 790 million people) still don’t have access to adequate sanitation (CDC fact). We live in a bubble and have a tendency to not see the rest of the world.
A virus that has killed people and has no vaccine is big news. Add that China is almost certainly under reporting this as most commie run countries do.
