January 15, 2020A plan by Texas to stop taking in foreign refugees this year was thrown into doubt by a court order that blocks the Trump administration from letting states opt out of refugee resettlement programs.
Texas became the first state to officially stop accepting refugees on Jan. 10, when Republican Governor Greg Abbott announced he wouldnt grant written consent for the Lone Star state to participate in resettlement programs, exercising a veto power conferred on states in a policy President Donald Trump announced in September.
A federal judge in Maryland on Wednesday (Jan 15, 2020) temporarily blocked the presidents executive order from taking effect. The ruling was in response to a legal challenge from religious organizations and charities that oversee resettlement programs in the U.S. for tens of thousands of people fleeing war, persecution and natural disasters in their countries.
Also, a big boo, hiss to our own Idaho Governor Little. Lots of people here are very unhappy about his decision.
County, governor support refugee resettlement in Idaho
December 31, 2019Idaho became the latest state to signal its willingness to continue accepting refugees for resettlement despite a presidential order giving state and local governments the ability to refuse them.
Twin Falls County commissioners unanimously approved accepting refugees after hearing testimony from community members, business owners and church leaders in support of the College of Southern Idaho Refugee Center.
Republican Gov. Brad Little joined 30 other governors nationwide who have agreed to accept refugees, officials said.
