I think they called him a ‘presidential contender’ because they loved how he was trashing Trump, and knew it would go to his head and cause him to trash Trump even more...
They knew he had absolutely no chance of ever running, but they kept telling him “Oooooh you’re so presidential- tell us more about stupid evil Trump”
Kinda like calling McCain the maverick.
