Maine Voices: Green New Deal will defuse threat of modern life as dystopia
The Portland Press-Herald ^ | January 9, 2020 | BY LARRY GILMAN

Posted on 01/09/2020 8:54:29 AM PST by Oldeconomybuyer

In the 1973 movie “Soylent Green,” Earth is grossly overpopulated and broiled by global warming. “How can anything survive in a climate like this?” asks Thorn, a New York cop played by Charlton Heston. “A heatwave all year long. A greenhouse effect. Everything is burning up.”

It’s a fable, not a forecast, but it gets some things disturbingly right. As for “burning up,” 2014-2018 were the five hottest years in observed weather history, and last July was the hottest month. In the last decade Greenland melting has doubled, Antarctic melting tripled, sea-level rise accelerated.

Civilization won’t end tomorrow, but its catastrophic contraction within a generation or so has become plausible.

Fortunately, there is a plan. It’s big and fast-moving, like the threat it counters, and daring, like all marvelous works, but practical, too. It is the Green New Deal as articulated by Bernie Sanders:

Invest $16.3 trillion in federal funds over just 10 years – less than the government committed to the bank bailout of 2008 – to turn things around.

Bernie’s plan is uniquely thorough and serious, the only one that puts the pedal to the metal. Elizabeth Warren proposes a fifth as much funding; Joe Biden offers a nothingburger with extra nothing. Want hope? Vote for Bernie on March 3.

Yet no project this big can be accomplished by electing one person to any office. We must be a movement beyond voting and bigger than elections: learning, speaking, organizing, acting up.

Like Soylent Green, only different – as different as life is from death. The Green New Deal is people.

Disturbingly right.

Commoners will fight for scraps of soy and protein chips while our betters live high on steak and tomatoes.

This is the age old struggle between Liberty and tyranny.

I do not understand why some people always have this lust for power over other people. Yet every age in history has them. An in every age the tyranny always tries to use a fake crisis to scare people into trading liberty for a fake sense of security.

That is what this is. “Climate change” is a manufactured political movement designed to scare voters into trading their liberty from a fake sense of security from a made up threat. The Communists used the “wreckers” for the Nazis it was “the Jews’, now it is “climate change”.

Somebody better tell Obama about the sea level rising by several feet as his new place on Martha’s Vineyard will soon be flooded. Certainly adopting Bernie’s Marxist socialism will stop climate change just like King Knute was able to command the tides to stop and the Inquisition burning more heretics prevented earthquakes.

‘Disturbingly right’ yet we have exceeded the life expectations of that film, of the self described experts of that era, and of the self described experts of the 1990s. It is outright fraud and a power grab.

President Trump is the first world leader to bring about REAL change in the world's large particle carbon emissions...

Trump's bringing back industry from China (the worst polluter in the world) to the United States (where we scrub every particle coming out of our smoke stacks). The bonus? Trump's bringing back our jobs while cleaning the world's air. The new NAFTA agreement goes further...

If global warming was as dramatic (or as real) as Larry Gilman writes our "hottest year" would be more than .01 of one degree hotter... But if it was real, Trump is the hero.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

This rising sea levels thing is no joke. I got some iced tea at a restaurant the other day, and I let it sit too long. When the ice melted it flowed out all over the table

And I wonder if the author’s a snowbird...

If so, not very environmentally friendly of him.

And I wonder which state he votes in...

[[Bernie’s plan is uniquely thorough and serious,]]

Yep- pretty much blew any argument he had after stating this

Man isn’t causing climate change0- and- only an idiot would think that 16 trillion is the price- as soon as they get everyone on board- that number is going to go up and up and up- it’s NEVER going to end- once they discover people are stupid enough to pay- they will bleed everyone right into poverty-

These people are THIEVES!

These people ate LIARS

These people are SCAM ARTISTS!

All those trillions have to go somewhere. It is Marxist redistribution from the West.

Love that....He was simply the greatest.

And this from the article is pretty dumb:

“”and last July was the hottest month”” - do we dare ask WHERE? I guess that means all over the world!

The newspaper in which this article is written is a good toilet paper substitute, if you like buying your toilet paper in one day supply increments.

yeah..lol...most residents of Southwest Harbor, known as “Backsiders”, are where most of the “native” hard working lobster fishermen, laborers and common folks on the Island live......They are looked down on by the transplanted rich and famous from “Northeast Harbor”.... (Check the price of RE in NE Harbor if you want sticker shock!)...

an Apples to Apples comparison would be NE Harbor=New York City....SW Harbor=Portland Me.....

Im guessing the author is a transplanted liberal social climber...
