Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo vowed on Wednesday to legalize marijuana in New York, prioritizing a push that fell apart last year amid tensions over who should be allowed to sell the drug and where the revenue should go.
The governor described the effort as a long overdue criminal justice reform that could help salve wounds in communities affected by the decades-long war on drugs.
“For decades, communities of color were disproportionately affected by the unequal enforcement of marijuana laws,” Mr. Cuomo said in his annual State of the State address. “Let’s legalize adult use of marijuana.”
The effort comes as the state faces down a $6 billion budget gap; on Wednesday, Mr. Cuomo, a third-term Democrat, said that legalized marijuana program could bring in $300 million a year in tax revenue, and billions of dollars more in economic activity when fully implemented, though that could be years away.
The governor’s proposal was part of a lengthy agenda that included bids to boost environmental spending, support small businesses and address a range of social ills, from overpriced feminine products to a lack of diversity on the state’s farms.

They want the government to “legalize” weed, but they are not going to get “legal” weed unless they buy their weed from a government licensed shop.
Eventually these states will make growing your own illegal, buying product from your friends (unlicensed dealers) illegal and having unlicensed product illegal as well.
“Legal weed” is just government approved weed, bought from a government licensed shop where the doper pays more then street price for.

NY’s government is a monster. Its expenditures will grow 3-4% per year regardless of what happens.
The only way NY’s politics and one-party state will change is with a devastating financial collapse, not unlike the that of the Soviet Union.
Trump should Federally decriminalize it this summer, to lock up millions of Millennial voters, so we can see a truly history landslide in November.
In Washington, DC, where personal and medical use are both legal, Congress will not allow the local government to set up mechanisms for recreational sales and tax collection. Currently, private citizens can grow and share small amounts of MJ, but cannot sell it. The people I have met who are doing this are all over 40. I don’t know how this is affecting millenials in DC.
The perpetual folly is the belief that the decriminalization/taxation of just one more vice will balance the books.

Well that’s always a good idea to legalize something, the money the ever-spending state can rake in.
