SAN FRANCISCO Since the 2016 election, when Russian trolls and a tsunami of misinformation turned social media into a partisan battlefield, Facebook has wrestled with the role it played in President Donald Trumps victory.
Now, according to a memo obtained by The New York Times, a longtime Facebook executive told employees that the company had a moral duty not to tilt the scales against Trump as he seeks reelection.
On Dec. 30, Andrew Bosworth, head of Facebooks virtual and augmented reality division, wrote on his internal Facebook page that, as a liberal, he found himself wanting to use the social networks powerful platform against Trump. But citing the Lord of the Rings franchise and philosopher John Rawls, Bosworth said that doing so would eventually backfire.
I find myself desperately wanting to pull any lever at my disposal to avoid the same result, he wrote. So what stays my hand? I find myself thinking of the Lord of the Rings at this moment.
Specifically when Frodo offers the ring to Galadrial and she imagines using the power righteously, at first, but knows it will eventually corrupt her, he said, misspelling the name of the character Galadriel. As tempting as it is to use the tools available to us to change the outcome, I am confident we must never do that or we will become that which we fear.

Such moral rectitude!! /eyeroll
It is problem “The Resistance” has to wrestle with and they do not appear to have the discipline to stop. The enormous snowball is huge and rolling, it’s like a drug because it’s easy and feels good. Attempting to manipulate public sentiment. The problem is that people have so many sources of info, they can see and feel when they are being manipulated. The only ones that bite hard on the bait are the ones who want to. This works to further turn off free thinkers. People are starting to realize that you cannot trust any entity to do the thinking for them, because they all, right and left, are trying to commandeer sentiment. Good luck with that. Didn’t work so well last time. Some are trying to learn, but it’s hard to fight off that drug.

That'll work.

One of the morning vids had someone on, broke down the employee contributions by economic sector. The Fairy Princess got the most from FB employees and from bank employees. But the Demwits should never have started a fight with Zuckerberg.
Trusting ‘the people’ is hard for totalitarian control freaks. Nice to see one of ‘em is taking a second look at the idea of a small groups of ‘elites’ making the choices for the many. (As is done in every hellhole in the world)
