Boomers: Its not too late. You can be heroes in the story of climate change.
You might not like to hear it, as many of you have long told pollsters you consider yourselves environmentalists, but collectively you have exacerbated the climate crisis more than any other generation.
Fossil fuels were cheap as you came of age and you burned too much of them. Your lifetime carbon footprint is so high youre forcing kids born today to emit eight times less than you just to hit a modest goal. And youve never taken climate change as seriously as the generations behind you.
Your generation put yourselves before the rest of us.
Over the past 60 years, your generation has become the politically dominant force in the West and the United States, in particular. Youre a large cohort. You vote.
Many of you also had a lot of good luck out of the gate. You entered the strongest labor market on record that provided livable wages even for those who did not attend college (which was a fraction of the price as it is now). You then did well in the housing market, turning cheap houses into lucrative sources of equity.
The climate emergency is getting worse and its happening faster than scientists feared. Land and oceans are getting hotter. Seas are rising faster. And were seeing a trend in more ferocious storms and wildfires, and devastating droughts and floods.
The problem isnt that we dont know what to do. The solutions are clear: We need to burn fewer fossil fuels, restore forests instead of destroying them, eat less meat, and consume less overall.
The problem isnt that we dont have people who are calling for change. The problem is political will, which requires political power. Your generation has it.

She ‘emits’ like a chimney stack... and is about as bright.
I am doing everything I possibly can to fight climate change, I’m pumping out as much CO2 as humanly possible to mitigate the horrendous global cooling that will be changing our global climate in the near future!
Quite right! Wanna save the world? Cut the throats of all the radical public scolds you meet.
Yeah those of us who had children exacerbated climate change that will adversely affect those children BY HAVING CHILDREN. So shut up.
GTH, Vox! #ClimateHoax is the #GatewayToCommunism
What the hell does she know? Just repeating the propaganda. Somewhere Goebbels is laughing his ass off (well, maybe not).
It’s wild, isnt it?
My Mom grew up without central heating, no indoor plumbing, used a washboard to clean clothes, and Christmas was gifts or oranges and dolls made out of corn husks.
Eco-kids today pretend like that was about “saving the earth”, when it was just the life of a poor family in the south c.1955.
Baby boomers didnt consume anywhere near the resources on a given day than young people today use to keep all of their gadgets powered.
You entered the strongest labor market on record that provided livable wages even for those who did not attend college (which was a fraction of the price as it is now). You then did well in the housing market, turning cheap houses into lucrative sources of equity.
That’s sure a surprise to me. I graduated college in 1979, gas had tripled in price, if you could wait long enough in line to get some, and it hadn’t ran out by the time you got the chance. Interest rates were 18-20% for business loans. It was a fantastic time to be looking for employment, LOL!
Okay, Doomer.
No thanks, Doomer.
We heated the house with wood that we cut (with a chainsaw!, horrors) and split with hand tools. We had 27 acres of forest.
We had plumbing. We were on septic system and a well. I am still using a well and septic.
With 8 children I would say we used less resources than a family of three today.
No dish washer (just kids taking turns doing them by hand)
No heater
No air conditioner
No microwave
Lawn mower was pushed
Garden was turned with a shovel
Brown bagged lunch to school
We didn’t know we were poor. Didn’t feel like it. We new other kids dressed better and ate at the cafeteria and got better presents at Christmas. We just accepted it.
If the left really believes that an impending climate catastrophe is some existential crisis, then I say we negotiate. What will they give us for “reducing emissions”, etc?
Would they ban abortions? Repeal gun control laws?
If they wouldn’t even entertain agreeing to something like that in exchange for us supporting their climate crap, then it can’t actually be that important, right?
This digital rag is the bastard offspring of Politico, founded by Hillarybots after she lost the 2008 Democrat nomination to Barack Obama. No one should take this Leftist whining seriously.
^^ This!
I wondered when being a Baby Boomer became a bad thing. I decided some Millennials don't want to work hard and they don't want to be lectured about it so they indulge in what they think is cute, little, derogatory name calling-----Boomers. Drives me nuts.
What are you doing, lady?
Dear Laura, stuff it.
Wow would i like to change the climate..oh wait she means the environment.
I need to change my lifestyle so liberals dont have to feel guilty about theirs. NO!
“Let us compare carbon footprints first then I will decide if I should bother listening to you first. I would imagine you consume more in one month than I do all year.”
Three questions I ask when reluctantly I get dragged into a climate change conversation with a believer:
1) How do you justify the carbon footprint of Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Gore, two of the most prominent climate change leaders? Both have multiple homes, fly on private jets, and live high consumption lifestyles.
2) The last ice age began 110,000 years ago and ended about 18,000 years ago. What steps could the animals living 110,000 years ago have taken to prevent the glaciers from advancing to cover most of North America?
3) Four years ago I visited Glacier National Park in Montana. I observed a number of alarming signs in the park indicating the glaciers in the park would be gone by 2030 due to climate change. In 2019, when I again visited the park, the signs were being removed. According to a ranger, the glaciers are now growing so the signs were no longer accurate. My question. If climate change is “settled science” and not to be questioned, why the dramatic shift in the status of the glaciers?
I have yet to receive an satisfactory answer to any of these questions.
