There are reports. Not sure if they have ever been verified but yes the US imported them with the idea of the Texas Rangers using them as mounts.

Didn't work out so well.

Probably.

It is sort of like the mustangs and burros here in the US. People throw a FIT if you cull them even if it is the only realistic thing to do. They have visions of Black Beauty being hauled away to the knackers while some cute child sobs in the background.

And even the ones who admit culling is the only thing to do throw a fit when you talk about making use of the meat and hides.

People are a sentimental bunch and city people who never had to clean up after an animal bigger then a dog are more sentimental then most.

“” “” Tim Moore, chief executive of carbon farming specialists RegenCo, said one million feral camels emitting the effect of a tonne of CO2 per year was akin to an additional 400,000 cars on the road.”” “”

Something is seriously wrong with their math. A human consumes about 550 liters of oxigen per day. A tiny four-banger would burn at least 30 times as much PER HOUR at idle rate. I don’t know how often a camel breaths but something tells it doesn’t do it that much.

“” “” More than 10,000 feral camels will be shot using professional shooters in helicopters from Wednesday.”” “”

ROLFMAO. Why not F-111s with fuel air bombs?

I’d wager roasted camel, camel stew and camel jerky all palatable.

We must have a wildlife place close to us in Cedar Park Texas somewhere because in December we always have a Christmas outdoor pageant and we always have at least one camel. His owner/handler brings him in a horse carrier. He is the highlight of all the animals in the show. So we have camels every year, had snow one year. So we say FOllow the Star Christmas pageant.... where camels aren’t as rare as snow! (Near Austin - very mild winters - that is why we are HERE and not up in Snow Country somewhere! )
