Burleigh County Commission rejects straw poll on refugee resettlement

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) - The Burleigh County Commission has shot down a non-binding straw poll that would have been put on the June ballot asking voters if the county should continue to accept refugees for resettlement. The Monday night 3-2 vote was the same as the commission vote last month not to accept more than 25 refugees in 2020.

Commissioner Brian Bittner proposed putting the question up for a public vote after some residents asked him to do it. Bittner is among those opposed to refugee resettlement.

Commission Chairman Jerry Woodcox said after the meeting that he thinks a straw poll could further polarize the community. He said the resettlement program has operated for 50 years and he says it is a good program, run very effectively.

Former Country Commissioner Klaus Lemke, an advocate for refugee resettlement, called the attempts to bar new refugee's "an exercise in futility." He said some commissioners "can't get over the fact they lost the vote and they try to bring it back again in any shape or form they can."

The December vote to limit the number of new refugees to no more than 25 refugees in 2020 came after initially indicating it could be the first local government to prohibit new refugees from a presidential order in September that gave states and counties the power to make the decision. That meeting drew hundreds of people and received national attention.

Silly North Dakota sheeple! Your ruling commissioners turned you down by one vote. We don't want you deplorables voting on it yourselves because the result might mean less money for Lutheran Social Services.

At least some are showing the spark of resistance, like the 2A movement in Va.

25 refugees per year is not outrageous.

It takes more effort to oppose this than to appeal to our better nature, meaning compassion. The left plays on this. Can you blame them?

Even Virginia Beach voted last night 6-4 to declare sanctuary status.

25 refugees per year is not outrageous.

Until one of them rapes and kills your family member.

You know these "refugees" are not getting sufficiently checked out before getting dumped off in the interior.

The whole thing needs to stop. We are not the world's dumping ground, and 25 is 25 too many.

The city's population was estimated in 2018 at 73,112, while its metropolitan population was 132,678.

It's not like Bismark is some sprawling metropolis that can absorb thousands of refugees.

Yes, the population of the Dakotas is not monolithic in their backgrounds. They have true American Indians, plus Swedes and Norwegians. Might be a few Germans or French hidden in the woodpile.

But few equatorial “refugees” will stay in ND unless the welfare payments encourage them to, much like what happened in ME or ID.

In fact, Mr. ILuvResettlementMoney, ask your neighbors in Boise how well their “refugees” are making out working at the yogurt plants up there. As the local police how well they obey any US law.

Once in the US, these economic refugees will bail to a warmer climate, only going back to their resettlement home to keep the checks coming.

It's a scam.

Elsewhere, in Lynchburg VA, after public meeting on 2nd Amendment Sanctuary resolution with city council, the Deputy Mayor changes her vote from pro to no after citizens leave the chamber believing that public forum on second amendment sanctuary status will happen.

She, the Deputy mayor, after the chamber was cleared of the public claimed she pressed the wrong button in the 4-3 yea vote, thus reversing the outcome. Fortunately, two. council members spoke out, one who previously voted against changed his vote to make the 4-3 outcome stand.

Worth watching to see how banal the evil really appears usin phantom fears of violence of the anti SA sanctuary used as justification to disallow public discussion.

Seemingly boring video shows the deeply ingrained deceit the dems employ to fool the populous...had the meeting not been televised would the trickery have been revealed but for a citizen posting it on youtube?

Or they can use reciprocity to get an inexpensive university degree like Omar did before she was elected to represent the Minnesota district of Somalia.

...........................................
Many, and possibly most of them, are not refugees at all, but are actually enemy soldiers coming here to conquer America and kill us all.

It’s a scam with deadly consequences, and the vast majority of American sheeple are so STUPID they won’t see it until it’s way too late to do anything about it.

Really convoluted article. It sounds like they voted to NOT limit “refugees” but the writer doesn’t want you to know that.

The way this is written is extremely confusing. I think the vote was to allow MORE than 25 per year, how much more, who knows?

So how many would be outrageous? 26? How about 260? Or maybe 2,600? Some sheeple would support 26 million as NOT outrageous!

These people are not “refugees” and are being sent here to slaughter the American sheeple. TAKE IT TO THE BANK!

Any amount is outrageous.

They are from a culture that is completely adverse to our culture.

The majority of them will be Muslim and they will not assimilate.

They don’t belong here.

True. I’m an uneducated deplorable and couldn’t really figure out exactly what they were arguing about. I’m glad other people see it the same way.
