We have proven that we can use pinpoint missile strikes to take out key individuals almost at will. Leave the refineries and ships and infrastructure—taking them out is so 20th Century. Take out the Supreme Leader and his henchman.

Iran fought Saddam’s Iraq for just under 8 years to a stalemate during the 1980s. It took less than 2 months for the US led coalition to boot Saddam’s Iraq out of Kuwait in early 1991. It took just over a month to invade Iraq in 2003 and send Saddam to his hole in the ground. Iran is a bigger country but just do the math and the fact that the US forces are more advanced than back then and that the President isn’t going to tie the military’s hands as much and one will get the idea.

I agree but Iran is ruled by religious psychopaths who are losing their grip on the country. I don’t put anything past them.

Iran has a third rate military that poses no threat to our country. They fought an 8 year war with Iraq with neither side showing an ability to mount an offensive. The Iranians sent children into mine fields to clear them.

Why anyone takes this BS rhetoric seriously is beyond me. We heard the same crap from the Iraqis. The Mother of all wars. Then there was reality as Iraqi troops surrendered to reporters and abandoned their tanks.

Let us not forget that the Iranians hired Mexican cartel assassins to kill the Saudi ambassador in DC.

A senior military official in Iran threatened an attack on some 35 “American targets,” including “destroyers and warships” near the Persian Gulf “

Go ahead punk, make our day. We have the most powerful military in the world and the will to use it.
Do you feel lucky punk?

This is all talk—They will use terror—not open warfare. They will hit us but try to not leave a trail. Rockets on soft targets. Maybe a ‘Mumbai attack’ on a hotel. Embassy attack in my guess. That or assassinations. An interesting time —but what will others do? India, China, Russia?

Good point. It wasn’t quite the blow effected by the NKVD with an ice-pick in Mexico City 70 years earlier, but you’ve got to give the IRGC a couple chutzpah points anyway for the thought process.

If Iran kills Americans, forget about some proportional response. Take out the oil fields, refineries, and port facilities. A collapsed economy will end the tyranny of the mullahs who hijacked the Iranian Revolution. Taking out key individuals will not change the regime. There are others who will take their place.

An Iranian attack could also provide the pretext to take out their nuclear facilities. Hence the mullahs will not be stupid enough to attack us. They understand the consequences.

I think that to compare the capability of the Iranian military that fought Iraq decades ago with the present is not a meaningful exercise.

A more meaningful exercise is comparing the Iranian military under General Suleiman with the same military having lost General Suleiman.

Did capabilities grow or did capabilities degrade during his said 20 year command. Giving the fact he died because he was arrogant and complacent, it would seem his force mental readiness might also not be competent. The forces exist but are parade ground soldiers. All the actual fighting is accomplished by surrogates.

We’ll see......

Given that the general was likely a tyrant and his staff was also killed, it would seem the Iranian military is in a state of disarray. The pent up ambition and resentment in the officer corps will not quickly sort its self out.

When I told my family of what happened about the general and his toadie going bye-bye, my boys (20 & 17) both started singing the chorus of that song.

As for me, if those nitwits want to strike us, and especially if they (God forbid) pop a nuke off in an American city, we need to empty a coue of Ohio-class boats on Iran and turn it into a self-lighted parking lot.

I was in Tehran during the fall of the Shah and the entrance of Khomeini. The mullahs are quite sane and not psychopaths. They are not suicidal. Yes, they are losing their grip on the country, which is why they need the specter of an external threat to have the public rally around them. They also need outside pressure to lift the oil sanctions. But they are not stupid enough to get into an overt war with the US.

That's exactly why I think they won't attack our ships operating in international waters. If things escalate, their Gulf facilities and navy are just too vulnerable, and they can't come close to presenting an equivalent threat to us.

They'll strike in Iraq...which is where they've been striking for the last decade and a half anyway.
