The best medium-length answer, in my opinion, would be to go read the whole of Plato’s Republic with the advice to reflect in particular on the teaching concerning the Philosopher-King in its full context. My short version of the medium-length answer is that people who want power should generally never be given power, which means that if you want the best people to rule over you, you must find means to compel them to be willing to rule. That the Dems were willing to nominate Hillary was sufficient to bring Trump out of the woodwork (I don’t think that he would want the job if someone roughly as competent as himself were willing to take it, which makes him better than any professional politician who would rather have a higher job if they are roughly competent enough).
Full disclosure—while I have a degree in philosophy, it is not my field (I am a college professor), and while I have respect for Plato, as a philosopher I would identify as an Aristotelean in the Thomistic tradition (this is capable of further specification).

Ditto! My personal philosophy is to never vote for those that want the office. One must strive to find capable leaders that reluctantly step up to the challenge. We must strive to search for candidates of honor and integrity who are humble to serve but not desirous of power and position.
