Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) reacted Friday to the U.S.’s deadly airstrike on a top Iranian military commander, stating that it would be “feckless” for the country to wage war against the Islamic regime without Congressional authorization.
“President Trump viscerally understands that the toppling of Saddam Hussein made Iran stronger. Soleimani, like Hussein, was an evil man who ordered the killing of Americans. Yet, the question remains, whether his death will lead to more instability in the Middle East or less,” Paul wrote on Twitter. “The question today is whether the assassination of Soleimani will expand the war to endanger the lives of every American soldier or diplomat in the Middle East?”
“If we are to go to war w/ Iran the Constitution dictates that we declare war. A war without a Congressional declaration is a recipe for feckless intermittent eruptions of violence w/ no clear mission for our soldiers,” the senator added. “Our young men and women in the armed services deserve better.”

The bonus in this case is Turkey, who wouldn't help us, is rewarded with a newly minted Kurdistan on their border. That Iran also has to deal with a Kurdish homeland on their border is a bonus...

Trump ain’t my favorite president, but in this, he is absolutely right! And both my favorite and least favorite(s) were wrong. As has been every other president in between.
True. Only Congress can declare a war.
The President can recognize a war and act accordingly.
Would any President in the last 60 years if faced with incoming nuclear tipped missiles have been expected to convene an emergency session of Congress and await a formal declaration of war before responding?

I’m against endless war but this was an attack on our embassy with the intent of burning to death hundreds of our people. President Trump saw an opportunity to strike back at the attacker and he took it. The critics should be attacking Iran.
Maybe...up to them, and the Iranian street isn’t too fond of going to war, and the Mullahs have to consider that.

He sometimes misinterprets the Constitution. A President can respond to and defend the nation and its interests against short term military attacks and imminent dangers when threatened. Congress reaffirmed that authority with the War Powers Act.
Another thing, I understand and respect his beliefs regarding non foreign intervention and how the founding fathers warned against foreign entanglements, I get all that and I’m generally supportive of that position. I supported President Trump’s decision on withdrawing from Syria for example. But this is 2020, not 1787. With technology that exists now, enemies half way around the world now have a greater ability to threaten us as opposed to what existed back then, and Paul needs to understand that.
And yet, Howard Dean was pilloried for saying in 2004 exactly what we are saying a decade and a half later.
Everyone (even some liberals) piled on him.
And yet time has proven the great Howard Dean right (or some Freepers are coming to that realization).
Perhaps we should listen to the pacifists after all.

Beg to differ. HERE, on FR, were posted photos of an Iraqi command post with a mural showing Iraqi-flagged airliners flying into the Twin Towers. Iraq at least supported it, may have helped pay for it.

The main difference is this time it won't be only the other side that's throwing punches, while we passively absorb punishment.
Trump has already expressed interest in ending US military presence in Iraq...if the Iraqi parliament votes to formally request the US leave their country, my guess is Trump will honor it.
