Blagojevich: House Democrats Would Have Impeached Lincoln
Newsmax ^ | Wednesday, 01 January 2020 | Rod Blagojevich

I, like most people from my home state of Illinois, am a great admirer of Abraham Lincoln.

Recently I've wondered what would have happened had Nancy Pelosi been the Speaker of the House when Abraham Lincoln was president.

Would Speaker Pelosi's House Democrats use the same flimsy impeachment standard they are currently using to impeach Honest Abe, one of the greatest presidents in the history of our country?

In 1998 I was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives during the Clinton impeachment, and in 2009, as the 40th governor of Illinois, I had the unhappy experience of being impeached and removed from office.

His job wasn’t to lose the nation in the middle of a rebellion.

It isn't a "rebellion" to assert the right of independence spelled out in our own Declaration of Independence.

It was rebellion to oppose people attempting to assert this right.

Exactly right. My point is that “abuse of power” is a charge an opposition party can level against just about any President, even one engaged in saving the Union.

The US Union didn't need to be "saved" anymore than the British Union (United Kingdom) needed to be saved.

This nation was founded on the principle that people had a right to independence, and they didn't need to be "saved" from wanting to be shed of a central government that they believed no longer served their interests.

I don’t know if she would’ve impeached him but the demonicRAT Party would have made John Wilkes Booth their Presidential nominee.

Lincoln fired on Fort Sumpter? /s

Close enough. He sent the warships with orders to fire on the Confederates. The only reason the confederates fired on Sumter was because the first of those ships had arrived, and according to their orders, the ships would soon be attacking the confederates around Sumter.

The confederates would not have attacked Sumter without the arrival of those warships with their belligerent orders. It was the sending of those ships that caused the war, and the members of Lincolns cabinet had told him that would be exactly what would happen if he sent those warships.

They were correct.

Ergo, Lincoln did in fact start the war.

The states still appointed their Senators when Lincoln was elected.

I doubt the House would have impeached Lincoln knowing that he won 18 out of 33 states (55%).

“....with as little fuss as possible”. What else should have happened to the Confed states? The cream of their male polulation had been killed off, and they were reduced to eating GRITS! If we didn’t intend for them to remain part of the Union, why conduct such a horrendous war to stop their leaving. To my mind, Lincoln was spot on; Restore those states as soon as practicable and get back to peace and prosperity. Was Grant wrong in providing food for Lee’s troops, and allowing them to keep their arms and their horses and go on home....if home was even there anymore?

i lived in Illinois for most of my life. I have now escaped to Florida, thank goodness. I watched Blago, whose major “sin” was being a flamboyant big mouth talker, being railroaded on basically trumped up charges by his fellow Dems, who wanted him out of the way because he was a rogue Dem that they couldn’t control.

It was Comey and his IL cronies that went after blago and screwed him over for alleging offering to sell a Senate seat (”it’s friggin golden”) that never took place other than big talk on Blago’s part. Blago did no more or less than any other IL politician by wheeling and dealing, in other words, practicing politics. Blago was set up and gotten rid of by his fellow Dems.

Blago got a totally raw deal and I hope Trump pardons him at his first opportunity to do so. Blago was ruined by the very same cadre of like minded Dem lawyers that have been going after Trump. Blago should never have been given a 14 year sentence just for being mouthy; he has children that have grown up without their father, while murderers in IL get 1/3 or less of the sentence that Blago got. It makes me sick, and this from a former conservative former citizen of the corrupt State of IL. Free Blago!

I think an interesting ‘what if’ alternative history is Lincoln not getting assassinated and getting to finish his term. Would he be on our money? Would he be rated as great as Washington? There would have been a lot of politics in ‘65-’69. I don’t know if he’d have been able to win the political fights over Reconstruction. Many southerners, who had no love for the man, realized that Booth took their best friend in the U.S. government.

Lincoln started the country's bloodiest war.

Yeah, right after the rebels started the war against the Union.

I can expect this sort of ignorance out of most people who don't know any better, but you've had the actual facts explained to you.

Lincoln started it by sending warships to attack the confederates. His cabinet told him this would start a war, and it did.

For that matter, Major Anderson himself wrote in his letter that what Lincoln had done (which Anderson considered dishonorable) would start a war, and that it was a cheap shot underhanded d**k move.

So yeah, Lincoln started the shooting.

Talk about ignorance! . Here is the timeline, Leading up to Lincoln being sworn in, and remember Lincoln wasn't sworn in until March 4th 1861. The whole war was started and provoked by the Confederates.

The House would have killed Lincoln if they thought they could have gotten away with it. Bad enough Southern Democrats started the damned war.
