My oldest son was addicted to meth and is in recovery.

My prayers for continued recovery, for him and for your sake.

Incarceration, and threat of longer term incarceration, happened to be one of the most important tools that helped put him on the road to recovery.

But didn't stop him from becoming addicted, it seems.

[[[But didn’t stop him from becoming addicted, it seems.]]]

Why would someone be threatened with incarceration before then?

Evidentially his son was facing the end result of his addiction. You know what context this is.

No, it didn't. After he was cut in half by a girl he loved dearly, he was self-medicating. For a time, he didn't care whether he lived or died. Not excusing it at all, but a lot of people become addicts because of some great pain in their lives.

Jail got him off of it long enough for his brain to get clearer so he could start to make more rational decisions. We were able to encourage him and build on that. Rebuilding his life is still a work in process. Depression (side effect of meth brain damage) and discouragement are his biggest enemies now.
