I think it takes about a decade of good pro economic growth policy before budgets can start to be balanced.

Trump is steering us in the right direction. Strong economic growth reduces dependency on the government. It takes time to undo the last 30 years.
The problem is that the wealthier the US becomes and the more the government takes in, the more it spends. This is what happened to Reagan after the tax cuts. Ultimately, it is not the fault of politicians, it is the voters’ fault. People do not want their government benefits cut. They want the other guy’s benefits cut. If Americans really wanted smaller government and lower spending, it would happen.

I know all that. One of my old platoon sergeants said once long ago, the early, mid-70’s or so, that if you gave the damned germans a rifle, tank, and two troops they would invade the stinking french.
