IMO it depends on the area. California has such a desperate housing shortage, and so much of that is due to NIMBYism (Not In My Back Yard), that this is a proper and necessary part of addressing all the myriad problems caused by those issues. Other things are necessary too, but a state government override of local single-family residence zoning has to be part of that package.

For the whole bloody state of California, where I'ved lived all of my life. Of which the last 37 years has been in a single-family residence in a single-family zoned subdivision that I designed myself. There is lots of buildable land here. Draw a straight line between Sacramento and Fresno, find a point halfway between those two cities and there I am.

There are lots of areas where this solution is necessary, and probably some other whole states.

I never faulted a NIMBY mentality from people tied to 360 months of mortgage payments; nobody will buy a house if they think their area will be targeted for Gibsmedat Relocation. No reason to destroy peoples’ nest eggs with this nonsense; it is basically breaching contracts with them.
