Mitch would care one way or the other. None of them except maybe Jim Jordan want Trump in office.
None of them except maybe Jim Jordan want Trump in office.
Thats not true. Not even close.
There were a lot of anti-Trump Republican lawmakers in 2016, but they had diverse reasons for it, and many of those reasons no longer apply.
Lets look at a few of the complaints.
He wasnt a real Republican - he had a history of supporting Democrat campaigns as often as not. Republicans doubted he would be loyal to the party.
He wasnt a real conservative - he had no political history to indicate that he shared the conservative principles of the traditional Republican platform, such as limited government, free enterprise, 2nd Amendment, pro life, military strength, and constitutional judges.
He was a billionaire celebrity talk show host - not a serious candidate - he had no chance of winning and he would drag the Republican Party down with him.
His political incorrectness and unpresidential manner were an embarrassment and would destroy the Republican brand.
His personal attacks against the Bushes, Cruz, Romney, McCain, Graham, Ryan and other Republicans during the primary campaign left him with powerful Republican enemies.
Three years later, most of those concerns have been completely disproven - he campaigns fiercely and effectively for Republicans, he champions conservative causes better than any Republican President ever, except perhaps RR. He proved that he is an unparalleled winner despite being new to politics. His political incorrectness and unpresidential style have not hurt his popularity or dragged the party down - his approval numbers are quite respectable.
There may still be some grudges held by Romney and other butt-hurt or envious Republicans, but Graham, Cruz, and many others seem to have put it behind them. Outspoken neverTrumpers or Trump doubters in the conservative media, like Levin, Limbaugh, Bennett, Preager, have come full circle in support.
Sure there are some compromised, deep state Republicans who really dont want the swamp drained - but their numbers are wildly exaggerated by some here at FR.
Republicans, like most politicians, will abandon a sinking ship - but President Trump is anything but a sinking ship.
They will support him - you will see.
