Sure - and they saw from the war in neighboring Spain that while Hitler was evil, the US ally Stalin was as well. French people couldn’t ignore the thousands of priests, hundreds of nuns, and dozen bishops martyred by the “Republicans”.

The French middle-class correctly decided that the Communists were more of a threat to them than the Nazis were.

Right - and after losing 1.7 million men 25 years before in the “war to end all wars”, they realized that they had no real role in the outcome either way.

American troops were surprised that the French they were “liberating” didn’t seem to be living so badly under occupation after all - and the British were disgusted that while their own people were dealing with strict rationing, the French appeared well-fed. Probably explained why the Americans landing in North Africa two years before were shot down by French troops there...
