Close to one-third of a $1.5 million federal grant meant to fund HIV prevention efforts in DeKalb County could go unspent by an end-of-the-year deadline, state records show.
Budget documents from the Georgia Department of Public Health, which won the money from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to fund projects in DeKalb, show a projected balance of almost $462,000 when the grant expires at the end of December.
Unless federal officials extend the funding deadline, both the county and the state could lose that money.
The DeKalb County Board of Health is actively working with our state and federal partners to identify fiscally responsible and client-focused opportunities to utilize the remaining funds, a spokesman said in a written statement.
What’s the HIV situation there? Maybe ongoing efforts to educate and prevent HIV transmission have worked so well, that they don’t need to spend that money any longer?
Isn’t that a good thing to be able to say you don’t need that extra money?
“extend the funding”
You can’t lose what you don’t have.
DeKalb county government is sadly perennially incompetent, when they dont go beyond that to outright criminal.
Sheesh, blew that. Here:

Sounds like the county health departments will have a gay old time with a huge year-end party with all that left over money.
Sounds like an audit should be forth-coming.
If you end up with unspent money, you should be REWARDED next year, NOT ENCOURAGED TO WASTE IT.
DeKalb County is just east of Atlanta and under 30% white. Atlanta metro has been described as having worse a HIV problem than third-world countries with it the worst among the black population.
DeKalb County is also rife with corruption. A few examples in the past ten years: a sheriff-elect was the victim of a contract killing by his opponent, six school board members were removed by the governor for mismanagement, a county CEO was suspended for extortion.
There's definitely a NEED for HIV prevention and education, it's just a dysfunctional county that's maybe more likely to see the money lining someone's pockets than going where it was meant to.
In this case it’s not being put to use, not because it isn’t needed.
Don’t put dirty needles or d!cks in your body.
That should cover 95% of the problem.
Tell them to cut me a check for $400k and we’ll call it even.
My DCH gave a $100 M grant to +++ -—— Health to build a data warehouse anchored by Medicaid and SHBP data but with a lot of other data in it.
+++ could not find competent people to staff the project. They went through over 20 leadership people and none of them knew what to do. They went through 100 workers in the trenches with a max of 75 on board at one time. 3 or 4 of the 75 knew what to do. But leadership would not listen to them because they were not hired with the label LEADER.
The official project started May 2018. Aug 2019 we cancelled the project. Between 80 and 90 million will probably not be spent and returned to CMS. Maybe a little over $10M will go to +++ and to the software tools they bought/leased.
I blame our K-PHD public education system for the incompetence of the people hired by +++. They had all the right education credentials... but did not know what to do.
Sesame Street has a game where they show 3 activities and ask:
Which is first?
Which is second?
Which is last?
+++ failed at that Sesame Street game.
