President Trump on Monday hammered the Commission on Presidential Debates, raising questions about his participation in debates next year with the eventual Democratic presidential nominee.
The president, in a trio of tweets, said he looked forward to debating "whoever the lucky person is who stumbles across the finish line" in the Democratic primary.
But he chastised the nonprofit commission responsible for organizing the presidential debates and suggested he might avoid them. That group has scheduled three general election debates next year.
"As President, the debates are up to me, and there are many options, including doing them directly & avoiding the nasty politics of this very biased Commission," Trump tweeted. "I will make a decision at an appropriate time but in the meantime, the Commission on Presidential Debates is NOT authorized to speak for me (or Rs)!"
The president claimed that the commission, which describes itself as nonpartisan, is "stacked with Trump Haters & Never Trumpers." Trump pointed to an incident in a 2016 presidential debate in which the commission acknowledged technical issues with his microphone.

Throw out a question, ‘How are you going to stop illegal immigration’
They would never ask that question. They question would be, how are you going to help all the hard working, infallible dreamers? And thats the problem with the debates.
Democrats would NEVER allow moderators to be all conservatives... but OUR people are expected to have ‘debates’ will all liberal moderators..
It’s nuts.
Donna Brazille is now at Fox but still a dem.
Chris Wallace has said he hates Trump but expects to moderate for Fox.
Remember Candy Crowley giving tactical support on fact checks favoring Obama vs. Romney and the facts were on Romney’s favor.
We don’t need moderators its a lib setup. If they could
cheat Bernie they can cheat any Republican.
I won’t watch any of the debates. I already know who I’m voting for.
Nobody elected that Commission, I don’t see where their right to participate in debates comes from.
Actually, the final Reagan/Mondale debate was a show-stopper!, and buttressed the landslide.
“I think he should say he’ll do a FOX debate if Hannity, Levin and RUSH moderate and ask question.”
HELL NO!
Levin would ask questions that no one was smart enough to understand
Rush would take 3 hours to ask one question.
Hannity would ask the SAME question OVER and OVER and OVER again.
Oh, you mean the League of Women Vipers?
Kinda like that impartial Snopes site, right?
Anyone who watched debates the last 40 years knows the “Commission” is not at all non partisan. That why the Moderators are always far left leaning “Journalists”
If it was “non partisan” we have way more balanced in Moderators.
Go to page 625 of the Pittsburgh phone book and select the 50th name. That person is the moderator. Debates will be based on Immigration, the economy and foreign affairs.
President Trump does not gain anything from debates, it is his opponent who stands to gain from it.
As an incumbent with a track record of keeping his campaign promises, the President has all the name recognition he needs. He holds huge rallies on a regular basis, and is solid with his base.
I would love to see him decline altogether.
Agreed
He should just tell them to off themselves, he won't be there, and without two parties, there is no 'debate'. Of course, that's exactly what the Partisan Media Shills and the other Democrats prefer. Y'know, because, the debate is over. Thanks Robert A Cook PE.
Partisan "debates" aren't debates at all.
They've just become opportunities for each side to spout their scripted talking points.
I like the idea of a topic being picked out of a hat and let each candidate go for it. A flip of the coin would determine who goes first.
Each topic would run 15-20 minutes total for the candidates to argue their position. A moderator would ensure both candidates had their fair share of the total time to present their side. Then go on to the next topic.
These would be real debates and would be more lively and interesting to the electorate watching.
Spread over 2-3 hours total length, 6 to 9 topics or issues could be addressed.
I think a format like this would make the debates must see events and would show the candidates ad libbing their points rather than having a script. People would see the candidates for who they really are rather than giving a prepared speech.
The “Presidential Debates” are nothing but a TV show totally constructed by the TV industry.
Before TV there was NEVER a “Presidential Debate”
The only thing these idiotic TV shows are good for are “gotcha” questions and semi-humorous one-liners by politicians who long to be stand-up comics.
I hope Pres. Trump does not accept any of the silly democrat talking heads as “moderators.” They always ask such stupid and silly questions, and frame the debates around the frivolities and foolishness. They, and their fellow democrats, seem to be incapable of understanding, not to mention even aware of, the serious issues facing this nation, economic and social.
There never will be agreement. Let the left choose one and the right choose one, and let each of them question the candidates equally.
